When you say Calais, most people think 'Cheap Alcohol!'. This is true, the cash and carry is a must for any visitor!
However Calais is much more than a stop-off destination for ferry/train passengers. There is a wealth of things to do and places to go in and around Calais. There are many castles around Calais, a visit provides a good historical insight into the town and surrounding area. Calais, despite a negative reputation for refugee camps and concrete tower blocks, actually has some spellbinding architecture. The town hall is incredible, as is the Notre Dame church in the town centre.
The town centre also offers many shops, as well as the War Museum. Visitors can climb the watch tower and get a great view from the top! The Parc Richlieu gardens are tranquil, there are many beaches nearby suitable for families.
Getting to Calais is easy. Take your car on the train or ferry (I prefer the train, it only takes 35 minutes, even though it's more expensive) across the channel from either Folkestone or Dover. To get to Dover head down the M20 from the M25.
Hope you found this useful, thanks for reading!
