This big city, which has nursed me since my childhood,is my favourite and I always cherish to get back here quickly whenever I am on a tour.We are displaced from East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, who got a warm shelter in Calcutta and got mingled in the sea of humanity here.
Calcutta was the seat of Government during the days of British Rule till 1911after which the Capital was shifted to Delhi. It had the illustrious presence of Clive,Dalhousie,Hastings,Canning etc., during British days as rulers of India.Their very presence in this city ,as representatives of East India Company ,flourished this city in becoming the second city of the British Commonwealth, next only to London.Beautiful buildings, dotted with Lawns and statues, built by the British and the local rich earned the name 'City of Palaces' for Calcutta.Though ruthless modernity has taken the place of those beauties, some of those are still existing and are treats to watch. Some of the old thoroughfares still boast of vintage tramcars.
The double cantilever bridge over the river Hooghly(a tributary of the great river Ganges)
is an engineering marvel of the British days.
Another bridge which serves Calcutta is a cable suspension bridge over river Hooghly being an engineering achievement of the present age.
The city is a terminal point of the 'Golden quadrilateral' a multilane highway connecting the four metropolis of India i.e.,Mumbai,New Delhi,Calcutta and Chennai.Calcutta is also the terminal point of Grand Trunk Road built centuries back by Sher Shah Suri, the Pathan ruler of India which runs upto Peshawar in Pakistan.
The city has two large railway terminuses which
are connected to every part of India by modern fast trains.
Calcutta is served for domestic and international air traffic by the 'Netaji Subhas International Airport'.It is the Gateway to the eastern India which is rich in culture and tradition. It is blessed by great statesmen like Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, great poet and literateur like Rabindra nath Tagore apart from Nobel laurietes like the great poet, the great physicist Dr.C.V.Raman and the economist Amartya Sen.Calcutta was the seat of the independence struggle and had produced many revolutionaries.
Industrial potential of this city is very high and can be cultivated for newer openings.
India's largest megapolis thrives on its culture and tradition apart from facilities available and
being a potential site for new and fruitful investments should be in the itinerary of every tourist.
