My husband and I spent 2 night at the Caledonian Hotel in Ullapool last week.
Ullapool is a small town in the North West of Scotland, about an hours drive north of Inverness. As one of the main ports for ferrys over to the island this is reason most people come to the area.
The Caledonian Hotel is one of the oldest and largest hotels in the town, with around 85 rooms. Being 8months pregnant I was a bit disappointed when we checked in and found out our room was up 2 flights of stairs, but on opening the bedroom door the climb was well worth it. We had one of the "turret rooms" which was large, spacious, and for the giant bay windows had fantastics views right out over the harbour and the surrounding hills.
We decided to go out and explore rather than eat in the hotel for dinner - and as we were to discover the next morning that was a very wise idea. The only word which can describe breakfast in the hotel is "chaotic". As the hotel was full with mainly coach trips everyone seemed to be appearing for breakfast at the same time (Mon-Fri 7am-9am) and there just weren't enough waiting staff. Table were being left uncleared, not being rest, and the kitchen weren't cooking the food quick enough so the buffet rapidly ran out. We had to wait around 30mins before we even got shown to a table. Needless to say we never ate in the hotel again after that!!
There was entertainment on in the hotel one of our nights - but again it was aimed mainly at the elderly coach parties, so it wasn't really to our taste. But there was things going on elsewhere in the town.
We did go into The Caley Inn (the hotel bar) for a few drinks on our last night. It had a good atmosphere, and seemed to be full of a lot of local people. Although much to our surprise last orders were at 10.45pm, which did seem surprisingly early for a hotel bar.
All in all we had a lovely relaxing few days in Ullapool, and on the whole the Caledonian Hotel was great and I would recommend it - and hopefully by the time anyone else visits they will have solved their problems of short staffing in the restaurant!!!!
For more information on the Caledonian Hotel, Quay Street, Ullapool, IV26 2UG, Tel 01854 612306. Although rather than booking directly with the hotel we found it much cheaper to book through www.superbreak.com with our 2 night B&B stay costing us only a total of £136.
