I have just returned from a weeks holiday in Calas de Mallorca, with my family including 3 youngsters aged between 7 and 14. As this was the first family holiday for 5 years, and the first time the boys have flown, I wanted it to be special.
The travel agent was very helpful finding a holiday within our budget and with plenty for the children. So in June we found ourselves jetting out of Leeds aiport to Palma. The main problem with the outward journey was because it was a night flight, the children were up all day, all the night and cranky for the first day of the holiday.
The coach journey between Palma and Calas de Mallorca took just over an hour and a half, with the travel rep complaining all the time that she was tired!!! When we arrived, we were shown to the hotel reception and from there, to our rooms (two adjacent). This was an improvement as we were told it was a family room when we booked!
It was raining!!!! unheard of in Mallorca, but it poured for 3 days. Whoever said it was warm when it rained, was lying!!! We hadn't gone prepared for cold weather so struggled for sweatshirts.
However on the fourth day, the sun came out, and when it was out it was hot, very hot.
The children went to the childrens club most days over lunchtime, so they didn't mind what the weather was doing. For the last few days, we dragged ourselves away from the village centre, where there was plenty to buy and all very cheap. We hired a four-wheeled, 6 seater bike, the like of which I have never seen. With 4 people pedalling (including the kids who thought it was great) we pedalled a few miles down the road to the Bird of Paradise park. This was interesting but the girl on the door was pushy - she forced us to hold a macaw, took photos then charged an arm and a leg for a printed out photo. Apart from that, it was okay.
We saw plenty of wildlife, lizards, dragonflies, strange birds, which kept the kids occupied. The scenery is spectacular - and I say that as someone who has worked round the world. I was seriously impressed.
We caught a bus (just the normal service) up to Porto Christo and visited the Cuevas del Drach - again absolutely unbelievable.
This could go on and on, as there was so much to see. No, there may not be nightlife, there may not be noisy clubs, but there were bars with tv's (very handy as Euro 2000 was on). Everyone was really friendly. They put up with our feeble attempts at Spanish, especially the lady in the bakery. I would recommend her goodies to anyone, they were delicious. The waiters in the bars were especially nice to the kids, which really helped make the holiday a success.
I can't wait to go back.
