Brooklands - NOT a romantic reservation!
Advantages: Breakfast. Disadvantages: Their cock-up and subsequent cover-up.
Read this factual account of Brooklands before you decide on staying here. Would you stay at Brooklands again if you reserve a room months in advance to arrive and find they have given your room to someone else? We (me and the wife) stay in a lot of hotels, seeing bands around the UK. We were looking forward to a great weekend in Cambridge, and we travelled some distance to get to the hotel… to find the double room ensuite we were looking forward ... ...When we arrived that afternoon, we knocked several times before someone came to the door. We were then asked our names – this was on the doorstep – and it was very cold. We were kept waiting outside while the person closed the door and checked our booking. I remember thinking this did not look good. Then we were told our room has been given to someone else. The person who made this mistake apparently wasn’t available but we were told it was an emergency: ...

Friendly staff but very poor food and restaurant
Advantages: Health and leisure facilities, friendly staff Disadvantages: Poor quality food, very uninviting restaurant, location (if you need to get into town)
It is a nice hotel in pleasant surroundings but I may have stayed there on a bad day as it's not somewhere i'll be planning to stay again.
It's location is on the outskirts of Cambridge so not ideal if you need to get to/from the city centre. A big negative point for me was the local traffic in the morning. I had to get to a meeting in the city centre and it took about 10 minutes just to get out of the hotel! It eventually took about 45 minutes ... ...blame the hotel for that. Just be warned, if you need to get somewhere, leave yourself plenty of extra time for sitting in traffic.
The hotel has a health and leisure club which looked very nice although I never had time to use the facilities when I stayed. The hotel (and leisure club) car park is big enough to allow most guests to park their car. There was of course the usual big expensive car parked right outside the front door causing a bit of ...

PARADIS Found?
Advantages: Two Rosettes, comfortable Disadvantages: A little Expensive
Duxford Lodge Hotel is situated just off the M11 between Cambridge and Saffron Walden, and a mere 20 minute drive from Stansted Airport. As well as offering just 15 ensuite bedrooms, it has a wonderful two rosette restaurant called Le Paradis which is attractive to both residents and locals. I first stayed here some seven years ago, having flown down to Stansted and met up with my sister. This week she invited me down again for an overnight stay, ... ...tight for cars to pass. Duxford is famous for the air museum although in all honesty I wouldn't choose it purely for its location; in our case, it was simply to have a get together. The picturesque village of Saffron Walden is not too far away, and an easy 15 minute drive from the hotel. There are a number of pubs close by, including the John Barleycorn, with its thatched roof, and dating back to 1660 (and where we had lunch seven years ago!)

Lucky dip...
Advantages: Ideal location, wonderfully luxurious building. Disadvantages: Some of the staff really need further training and/or to work on their attitude to their guests.
Firstly, this is a beautiful building. It's also ideally situated if you don't want to be driving too much as it's slap in the heart of the city. I've stayed there twice now with my partner and she and I share the same opinion. Both times we've had one of their "executive double rooms" and been very impressed with it. The rooms have been comfortable and the beds very luxurious. Our experiences with the customer service have been rather more patchy. ... ...in bed. The tray of food that arrived, while exactly what we ordered was largely cold and inedible, the scrambled eggs, especially, looking as though they'd bounce if they were dropped! My recommendation would be to go for the cereal if you're having breakfast in your room. Or to go down to the ballroom for breakfast. Whenever we've gone down for breakfast we've been lucky enough to be seated in the window overlooking a park and thoroughly enjoyed ...

Good location but gets booked up
Advantages: Location, location, location Disadvantages: Not good at multi-tasking if there's a function being held there
My parents stayed here for my graduation and found it in general to be very comfortable and was in an ideal location. It has some parking which anyone who has been to Cam before knows is pretty useful. The food is really good there and the reception area is spacious with views over the river. Really close to all the central colleges so would be good for sight-seeing.
Not particularly good as regards value but the location means it's very handy.
