Advantages: Hill resort. Relatively inexpensive Disadvantages: Isolated. Commercialised.Soil erosion.
The Cameron Highlands are Malaysia's best known hill resort and essentially there are three main areas, Brinchang,Tanah Rata and Ringlet. Nestling around 1500 metres above sea level the place is named after William Cameron,a Scottish born government surveyor who discovered it in 1885 and desribed it "... a fine plateau with gentle slopes,shut in by lofty mountains.."
What are the main attractions ? There are flower nurseries ,growing the likes of ... ...tea plantations,a 18 hole golf course,jungle paths,. a Butterfly farm and a aboriginal (orang Asli) settlement. Jungle trekking,fishing and golf are popular pastimes. There is a wide choice of accommodations ranging from de luxe resort hotels to chalets for backpackers. I enjoy the green panoramic view of tea plantation and also the cold breeze which really cool me down and relax my tense brain. Besides tea, this place also produce various types of flowers and mushrooms for local comsumption and also export, especially tea. Since I like flowers very much, usually I will bring home lots of flowers. They are cheap! ...

...at Tanah Rata in the Cameron Highlands, and some of the time it was great, some of the time it wasn't. When we arrived we were really glad that it was cool - an English climate compared to the rest of Malaysia and sweaty KL. Also, the hostel we stayed in was really nice. However, if the weather is bad (which it was), there isn't an awful lot to do. We went on the obligatory tour of all the local sites, and apart from the tea factory they were all ... ...round. Then, because of the rain, we couldn't leave for Pangkor for two days because the only road out of the place was blocked by over 20 landslides. Great. One good thing was the banana leaf curry we had intown, and there was a cheap laundrette. It's also a real pity that the walking trails (supposedly good) aren't maintained or marked. Leeches come out in the rain - we didn't risk it. ...
