Advantages: Unique day or half day trip Disadvantages: A fair distance out of town
Having lived in MexicoCity since the start of July, I can't believe it's taken me over 3 months to visit this place, since it's one of the most famous attractions in the city and has been since the 1920s. Xochimilco (soch-ee-milk-oh) is an area located to the south of the city, known for its series of canals, the remains of old Lake Xochimilco. Quick trivia here, this was home to canoeing and rowing competitions when Mexico hosted the Olympics back in 1968.
~ Getting There and When To Go ~
Xochimilco isn't just a bit south of the city, it's a long way away, so much so that it took me over an hour to get there and I already live south of the centre. Metros only run as far as Tasqueña (end of Line 2, the blue one) and from there you can either catch the Tren Ligero ("electric train" or as I would call it...a tram) or take ...
Advantages: Loads of free stuff to see and do Disadvantages: Can be busy at weekends
of other stuff. There are also a couple of sit down cafes in the park. People sell helium balloons, princess tiaras, cuddly toys, various Mexican souvenirs, cameras and batteries in case you've forgotten then. You can have your photo (or your child's photo) taken with Winnie the Pooh or Elmo, though only in Mexico would you consider these costumes at all similar to the "real" thing (in other words...in any other country they'd be a law suit waiting to happen).
VERDICT
When I first moved to MexicoCity I lived a few blocks from the park and regularly went there when I wanted some fresh air - it really is a green oasis in an otherwise smoggy city. There is so much to do that I never did the same thing twice, and I still have more to see. People say MexicoCity is dangerous, and they say parks can be dangerous, but I have felt perfectly ...
Advantages: More filled with excitement than Robbie Williamses pants Disadvantages: Keep your ehad screwed on and there are none.
MexicoCity. The world?s fourth biggest city, with probably one of the worst reputations. I went there not by choice but out of necessity because that was the only way you could have gotten me there. I was living in Mexico, about five hours away from MexicoCity in a place called San Luis Potosi when my passport ran out. That meant only one thing. A trip to the British Embassy in MexicoCity.
I was terrified.
Because you read about it don?t you? You read about all the horrific things that happen in MexicoCity. You read that Mexico has the highest Kidnapping rate in the world. (It?s just taken over from Columbia) You read about people that only stepped out of their hotel rooms for a second and are mugged on the doorstep. So I wasn?t looking forward to it.
This is what I found.
We took the bus in and hit MexicoCity ...
