A truly unforgettable experience...

Advantages: Potentially life changing. Potentially meet friends for life. Reputable agency.
Disadvantages: Bit of a gamble as to whether you find a camp where you are happy.

...- I stumbled across the Camp America programme. I had known a couple of people who had done it and found myself getting hooked on the idea.

I spoke to a few people and found advice on the best way to go about getting the ball rolling. By this time I had already done a lot of youth work with disadvantaged kids - so I decided that these were the types of kids that I wanted to work with again.

I had a look round the Camp ...
...wanted to find the right camp for me...IF I was going to go.

Best to my knowledge, there are 2 main ways to get a job with Camp America. You can either fill out all the application forms and send them off - which will get you an interview at a local office with a CA representative - then they will place you in a camp. OR you can go along to a convention, meet the camp directors face to face, have an 'on the spot' interview and in effect ... more

My Camp America experience

Advantages: Great Experience, Camps in great settings
Disadvantages: Money, Can have bad experiences....

...So I applied to Camp America back in December 2005, Camp America sends over 8,000 Brits across the pond to some of the best US camps. (there are literally tens of thousands of American Summer Camps, ranging from top sport institutions to day camps for under-privileged inner-city kids). I shall try to write this review in two parts. The role played by Camp America, and then my personal experiences, which unfortunately weren't very good. First of ...
...application is dealt with by Camp America, it is a camp in America that actively seeks you out and employs you. So if you get through the Camp America process, but no-one in America wants to employ you, you ain't going anywhere! You do get your money back though! I got offered a job almost straight away, after about a week, I had friends who were waiting for months, one who upto 2 weeks before she was supposed to be going away didn't have an offer! ...

camp america: my bad experince

Advantages: new friends, new country, learn new skills, tan, different culture, active
Disadvantages: home sickness, far away from home, hard work, pressured, tiring, long hours, little pay, challenging

...my summer at a sumemr camp in New Jersey where I was to work with special needs children for nine weeks along with a friend. I recommended Camp America to my friend as I had done camp two years previously having spent two wonderful summers at another special needs camp. My friend and I are both training to be occupational therapists and have been studying for two years having built up an extensive knowledge of various disabilities. I have worked ...
...us apt candidates for the camp America programme in our opinion. When we arrived at the camp the food was appalling but we had arrived expecting that, however the cold coffee was inexcusable. There was not really enough food to go around all the counsellors and vegetarians were forced to eat cold leftovers even though they had been promised proper vegetarian food. I dared not ask if they had any wheat free meals for me although I had e mailed on ...

Summer Camp Experience

Advantages: Lots of information for people thinking about going to work at camp
Disadvantages: Quite long

...with Bunac from the summer camp worldwide website where there are lots of summer camp reviews: http://www.summercampworldwide.com Thought it might be useful for anyone thinking about going to summer camp next year: It all began in 2002 when I finished my A-levels and had decided to take a year out, it would turn out to be a working holiday that changed my life. My experiences at camp are unrivalled and it's something that I love to do. As I am ...
...summer at Camp and there could be more... I had put aside one summer to go and be a camp counselor because as a kid I remember watching 'Bug Juice' in the school holidays and thinking "I want to go". I never had the chance as a child and i wanted to travel on my own so i started surfing the internet for a route into this adventure, which led me to www.bunac.org. At the time i was 17 and wasn't really eligible for summer camp (generally you have ...

Go For It!

Advantages: Fantastic Lifetime Opportunity
Disadvantages: Hard work and risk of burning

I went on Camp America when I was 18 years old that's 9 years ago now. Camp America has been one of the best experiences of my life and even though it was really hard work it was worth it. It is a sense of achievement like you've never felt before. Like you've put something into the world and you've gone somewhere and done something. It is in my memory's, it will always live there, I long to go back, but I have comittments now. I did my camp America ...
...Camps vary, but on my camp I worked 24/7 and was with a group of 8 campers all this time. As you can imagine this gets very tiring and counsellors as you will be called if you decide to work on a camp fall out with one another. With me I didn't have hardly any friends because I have never been comfortable in group surroundings like this after being bullied at school. I was homesick and kept myself to myself. To some people it's about the friends ...

Camp America Counsellor

Advantages: It was amazing
Disadvantages: Do it for the enjoyment, not the money

...the USA and becoming a camp counsellor. I thought the placement would offer me a great opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people and travel whilst integrating into a new and exciting society. I managed to get connected and after filling out the application form I had to attend an interview where it was assessed if I was right for the type of work available. This interview was extremely successful and I was told to attend a pre departure meeting ...
...New York, then all the camp counselors were transported from the airport to the hotel for the night whilst the company tried to arranged summer camp placements to hundreds of International staff, who like me hadn't yet been placed. When I arrived at the hotel, I went into the main office which was sending people to camps all over the country. I felt quite apprehensive and waited as they found a suitable camp to send me too. The American man said ...

The virtues of working at a Summer Camp.

Advantages: You'll get to go to the States for three months!
Disadvantages: long days, hard work, little time off

forward to the rest of the year round. The placement was organised for me by the comapny BUNAC, but you can also apply through the organisation Camp America which is exactly the same. As far as I am aware BUNAC pay slightly more than CA which is an advantage. Not that I mean to get you too excited about the pay that is, you do not go and work at a Summer Camp unless you want to go for the experience, the help the kids, to meet people, travel etc. The money is dire, but still there are 1000's of applicants and you arn't guarenteed a place (although if you have some previous experience and are entusiatic etc you shouldn't encounter problems). Additionally I would recomment BUNAC over CA as a friend applied through CA and she had a lot of problems contacting them while we were away and problems booking her return flight etc.... BUNAC ...

BUNAC - YOU CAN WORK ABROAD ALL SUMMER

Advantages: they sort it all out for you
Disadvantages: more expensive than doing it yourself?

I am about to spend the summer on the Work America scheme in the States working in California at an amusement park on the beach and I can't wait! I orgainesd the whole thing through BUNAC who are a non profit making organisation which was set up to allow students to work around the world either in their gap years or in the long university summers. The programme that I am on is called work america and allows me to work anywhere I like in america for up to 3 and a half months, with travelling time afterwards. They offer plently of others programmes as well, including camp america (work on a childrens summer camp for the summer), work canada, australia, new zealand, ghana, jamaica etc. Basically they allow British students to work all over the world providing all excellent way of combining work with travel in another country. My ...

Brilliant Unbeatable Nifty Affordable Company!

Advantages: helpful throughout, enable you to get a visa, higher wages than with competitors
Disadvantages: insurance is slightly expensive

There are very few jobs where you can claim you have taught a child how to jump on a horse, created a giant paper mache toothbrush, impersonated Elvis and acted as a choir master all in the one day. If you are reading this wishing that was your job, maybe it's time you considered summer camp. I have had the privilege to work at two summer camps now and it is an experience I have treasured, and one I could not have done without the help of BUNAC. There are a lot of companies out there offering the same services as them - Camp America, CCUSA, etc..but BUNAC has proved to be the most cost-effective way to have your working adventure. WHAT DO BUNAC DO? All the tricky bits! Obtaining a US work visa is near impossible without the aid of a company like this, and almost every camp will not even consider hiring an international ...
