Hotel Campanile (a French chain) is now well established as a chain throughout the United Kingdom so when I was looking for a room at quite short notice in Liverpool I did not hesitate to reserve one here despite the fact that I had never stayed in one before.

Of the chain hotels which came up when I searched on the internet, this was the cheapest and the excellent location meant that I did not have to compromise. The main shopping area is just a few minutes away and tourist attractions such as The Beatles Story, the Tate Liverpool and The Albert Dock are practically on the door-step.

The Liverpool hotel is situated well-back from the main road which stretches along the rejuvenated docks area of the city. This means that you have the convenience of the location without any of the traffic noise. We arrived in the city by train and found it was just a ten minute walk from Lime Street station. If you are arriving by car it is easy to find by following the plentiful signs for the Albert and Queens Docks and the hotel has sufficient secure parking.

The reception/entrance area is multi-functional. It houses a bar with plenty of seats and tables where light hot and cold meals can be ordered during the day and into the evening. In the mornings it is the area used for breakfast. We were checked in quickly but the recpetionist seemed also to be the person serving at the bar and preparing some meals and her top was dirty and scruffy. She was not from this country and her English was quite poor. I realise that the catering/hotel industry is full of people from other countries who come here to improve their English but I thought that hers was so poor that it was a struggle to make ourselves understood and for her to answer us.

We were given vouchers which we were to present the following morning if we wanted breakfast. If we did not want breakfast we were told to prsent the vouchers at check-out when the price of two breakfasts would be deducted from the bill. I feel that it would be better to charge for breakfast only if it was taken to speed up the check-out process. Since the rooms did not have a minbar there could be no other charges and I would have preferred to have paid on arrival so everything was done.

We were not given any help or directions to find our room but it did not prove difficult.Dpesipite the fact that the lift was roomy enough for a wheelchair the corridors wre narrow and access to the rooms would have been awkward.

Our room was small but there was enough room to move freely around the bed and there was adequate space to hang up a few items of clothing. The en-suite bathroom was also small but big enough for our stay of only one night. All rooms here come with bath-tub and overhead shower unit. This was most welcome and useful I would expect for families as it is much easier to bath a child than to shower!

Everything was spotless - the bedding was fresh and crisp and the bathroom positively sparkled. My partner was pleased, as ever, to note the availability of bathroom "pinchables" (soap, shower gel and shampoo).

The room came equipped with kettle and plenty of tea bags and coffee, with a couple of biscuits too. We were pleased to see, too, that there were enough little cartons of milk for at least a couple of drinks.

Although we had no time to sit and watch it (except to quickly scan the footie results while getting ready to hit the town) a colour television with pre-set radio stations was provided.

Waiting for a taxi (kindly arranged by the receptionist) we decided to have a quick drink in the bar. The (now) bar-tender had never heard of ouzo (we were heading for a Greek restaurant) so pernod was requested as a substitute. She had never heard of this either. A gin and tonic was fine though and I ordered a pint of lager. While the prices were not bargain basement they were reasonable for a hotel.

Arriving back in the early hours we tried to open the window but found that for safety and security measures the windows opened barely more than a crack. However we did not find the room too stuffy through the course of the night.

We did not have breakfast the following morning. This was mainly because we were suffering from the after effects of the previous night and wanted to get some Mersey air first. However as we checked out we saw that some people were having breakfast and it seemed like quite a reasonable cooked English breakfast.

I would thoroughly recommend the Liverpool Campanile to anyone looking for reasonable priced, well-situated accommodtion in the city.
