Campanile Hull, Kingston-upon-Hull

...internet I came across the Campanile which seemed to be reasonably priced and conveniently located for where I needed to be. The thing that had appealed to me with this hotel over others in the city was that you had your own private entrance to your room (they in chalet style blocks) meaning you didn't have to pass through reception to get to your room and could come and go as you pleased.

I had to stay in Hull for a week for work purposes and after much searching on the internet I came across the Campanile which seemed to be reasonably priced and conveniently located for where I needed to be. The thing that had appealed to me with this hotel over others in the city was that you had your own private entrance to your room (they in chalet style blocks) meaning you didn't have to pass through reception to get to your room and could come and go as you pleased.

However when I checked in at reception I was told that a further £50 per night (bond money I think they called it) was required in addition to the tariff I had already paid. This was something that had not been mentioned at the time of booking and although the money would be returned once I had checked out I still felt it was something that should have been made clear at the time of booking. The woman on reception insisted it was something all hotels do, but out of the hundreds of hotels I must have stayed in over the years this is most definitely the first and only time I have encountered this practice. Fortunately for me I had a credit card with me enabling me to pay this extra fee, but I still felt that £50 per night, when I was staying for 6 days was a lot to ask.

I had no complaints about my actual room. It was clean, tidy and comfortable. My only worry was that I was located on the ground floor and with Hull not being the safest of places and my room very close to the Beverley Road entrance (door facing the road) I was rather concerned for my safety through the night, especially as it tends to get rather rowdy along there late at night.

I would definitely consider staying here again if I am planning to go out with friends who live in Hull over a weekend, purely because of the privacy factor of being able to come and go as you please without reception keeping tabs on you and the fact that the hotel is located close to the city centre and popular Princes Avenue area.
