I thought I would take this chance to tell you about my holiday, whilst at the same time giving you my ultimate A – Z guide to camping.
The last weekend in July was HOT, DAMN HOT!!! It was this weekend that the World Superbikes were racing at Brands Hatch, and we decided to stay the whole weekend and camp as in previous years. I have learnt from experience that there are certain things that are essential to take with you when camping, so here goes ~
A is for ALCOHOL – We all like to have a few drinks whilst on our holidays, but don’t rely on the venue to provide decent beer. In my experience a Pint of lager can cost anything up to £4.00, and usually tastes like Warm Cats Pee! Take supplies with you we took bottles of stella which we bought in the supermarket for £12.99 for 24 bottles.
B is for BABY WIPES – Anyone that has ever been to a Festival, Concert or Event with camping facilities will tell you that the toilet blocks are terrible, after the first hour there is no toilet roll, the toilets are blocked with all sorts of nasty substances and the sinks are so dirty that you felt cleaner when you went in than when you left. Take a good supply of baby wipes to wash your hands and face in the morning. They are also brilliant to cool you down when the weather is as hot as it was.
C is for CARRIER BAGS – Take loads with you. You can put rubbish in them or wet or dirty clothes. You can also sit on them whilst having breakfast, when the grass is still damp.
D is for DISPOSABLE BARBECUE – They are so useful. They are only around £2.99 to buy from Supermarkets or Petrol Stations. You simply light the paper on top leave for 20 minutes and start cooking. You can then throw them away. ( Please note, some camp sites do not allow Disposable Barbecues a they are a fire risk, check individual site rules).
E is for EAR PLUGS – If you require sleep over the weekend, I strongly recommend investing in a pair of these. Take my experience, we went to bed at midnight and couldn’t sleep for the first hour due to the various parties around the site. I dropped off at around 1am only to be woken at 2am buy a live band starting up about 50 yards away. They had bought generators so were a fully electric Rock Band. I was again woken at 3am by the large number of party goes retuning to their tents and falling over mine in the process. Then I was woken at 4am by an impromptu firework display. The alarm went of at 6am and I was knackered.
F is for FIRST AID KIT – To be filled with Plasters, paracetamol ( for the hangover), Savlon and diacalm ( incase your crap with Barbecues).
G is for GUYS – WARNING I am about to be sexist. Make sure there are a couple of men with you. They are very useful for putting up tents, barbecuing your food and getting rid of spiders from your tent.
H is for HAT – If your event lasts for 3 to 4 days you will defiantly require a hat. Not only is it essential to block out the sun, but also covers up greasy hair (remember you really will not want to use the showers).
I is for INSECT SPRAY – I guarantee that when you return to your tent at night is will be full of Wasps, Flies, Knats and all sorts of horrid bitey things.
J is for JUNK FOOD – As with the beer, the food provided will be overpriced and a health hazard. Fill your bags with Pringles etc, and you won’t go hungry.
K is for KOOL BAG – Yes I know it begins with a C but give me a break! Not only is a kool bag essential to keep your burgers, sausages etc at a safe temperature but is also a must to keep your drinks cool. Two years ago our water got so hot in the sun you could have made a decent cup of tea with it.
L is for LOO ROLL –as previously mentioned, there will be none on the site.
M is for MATCHES – You will not believe how many people asked to borrow a light to start their Barbecues. Luckily we are all smokers so there were plenty of lighters to hand.
N is for NEWSPAPER – useful to stuff inside blokes trainers, so that the smell in the tent doesn’t knock you out.
O is for OBSERVATION SKILLS – Ours were sadly lacking when we pitched our tent on an Ants nest!
P is for PHONE – Make sure you take your fully charged mobile, it is so easy to wander off to the toilet block and forget where your tent is. A quick call to your friends and they can guide you back.
Q is for QUEUE BUSTING – When everyone arrives it is usually over the space of a few hours, but when it is time to leave everyone moves at once. We were stuck in a queue of traffic for 3 hours. Make sure you have plenty of tapes, books and nibbles left.
R is for RUCKSACK – Never leave any valuables in your tent. Take a rucksack and fill with everything you will need for the day. ( Someone got back to the next tent to ours and their sleeping bags and beer had gone).
S is for SWISS ARMY KNIFE – The knife is useful for cutting open beer boxes, the bottle cap for opening beer bottles, and the cork screw for the cheap plonk. Do NOT take the knife into the venue with you, you could get in trouble, leave it in the tent.
T is for TORCH – Can you believe that of the 5 persons in my group, I was the only one that could see to zip up my sleeping bag.
U is for UNDERWEAR – Gentlemen please take clean underwear with you! This is a bit of a private joke, but just bear in mind how very hot it was, and the lack of showers and decent toilet facilities.
V is for VALUABLES – Try not to take anything valuable with you. As with all crowded areas pickpockets and tent thieves are a plenty.
W is for WATER – Take gallons of bottled water with you. It is useful in the mornings to brush your teeth, for dampening down barbecues, and for drinking during the day. With cans of coke costing up to £2.00 and supplies low you need to keep drinking. Due to the extreme heat of the weekend, the announcer kept telling us all to drink plenty ( and avoid alcohol ) as many people were clasping from dehydration.
X is for XTRA CIGARETTES – If you are a smoker take plenty with you, there are very rarely places to buy fags at such venues.
Y is for YOUR MATES – Take them with you, and keep them close. Look after each other and have lots of FUN!
Z is for ZZzzz – You will sleep for a week when you get home, I guarantee!

...I have to offer.
Camping I love. I have many a fond memory of my days in cubs, scouts, and ventures. At the very best of times campsites really are dreary, boring places with mandatory crap weather whatever the time of year. But what made camping so fun was what a bunch of twenty or so lads could get up to. I must add at this point that none of us ever went to private school… so there were no activities like dropping the soap, nor anything ... ...mate with a blunt penknife, camping was a superb laugh.
Of course for those more adventurous, camping can be equally as cool. For instance rockclimbing holiday camps, or kayaking trips down river- stopping off to camp in a random field every night. The possibilities are endless. This brings me on to my next point about caravan sights. In my opinion who on earth would want to participate in this kind of activity?
Camping despite its basic living ...

When camping in Europe it is best to drive, what you spend on car hire, you spend on fuel and tolls getting there and back. This also gives you the oppertunity to see abit of the countryside whilst you trevel, your free to start and stop when and where you like and see and do whateva you want along the way!
I would advise over night stops along the way, especially for long journeys. Most campsites allow overnight stops, allow ... ...of moth eaten canvas and in with the bright, airy, spacious, well facilitated, multi bedroom tents. The tents are so different to how I imagined them to be, I was over impressed!
I really don't think that you can go wrong with a camping holiday, there's somthing for everyone! ...

Advantages: Great for tiny ones Disadvantages: none
I have just returned from a holiday in France at a camp site called Chateau de Poinsouze which is in the centre of France quite near Tours. It was the first time that we had taken our 3 year old away and what a success not only for us but she absolutly loved it. We booked a 9 day stay through Fleur Holidays in a mobile home which i must say was very luxurious on a beautiful campsite that had a huge lake, swimming pool and child's play zone which was ... ...and pet. The site was very safe and we had no worries about letting her off the reins as such and there was a great restaurent that was happy to have kid's then again everywhere in France seems to allow kid's even the Bars. We visited loads of great and cheap cheateau's,stone formations, farm's,lakes, waterfalls and loads more all of which were very child friendly. The food and wine were very cheap and the market in the nearest town of boussac was ...

Advantages: OK if you like local club meets. Disadvantages: They don't trust their own members.
We were about to take our second year of C&C Club membership and decided on a booking for a late holiday with the club site at Scarborough. We were unable to book via the club website as it instructed us to call the site directly. We rang the site to make our booking for a 7-night stay costing £16.35 per night (caravan, awning & electric minus our 'club member' and 'over 60s' discounts)......pretty pricey we thought for late season but, so what, ... ...could not take a booking without a deposit via Debit Card even though we were fully-paid-up members of the club. We told them that we do not give our card details over the phone to anyone (as we are all being told by our Banks etc). Their tone then became very abrupt and we were basically told 'don't bother turning up'. Needless to say, we then hung up the phone and rang the customer services department of the C&C Club. Yes, you guessed it....the ...

...have been members of the Camping & Caravanning club for some 5 years now and thoroughly enjoy discovering new sites around the UK. Last year we were pleasantly surprised by the Club site at Clent Hills in the West Midlands. Although only a few miles from the suburbs of Birmingham it is surrounded by fields and country lanes and the popular Clent Hills are nearby. It is possible to walk to the top of the Hill - even with a pushchair (it is pushchair/wheelchair ... ...some 'stones' which probably mark the site of bygone rituals or the like.. ...
The Club site is well kept and particulary attractive with ample space between vans. The toilet facilities are of a high standard and spotlessly clean. The site wardens were helpful and friendly. We would strongly recommend it for a peaceful weekend break or longer stay. If required there a two pubs which serve food in the nearby village and there is also a fish and chip ...

Just as you enter Bala turn right onto the A4212
Follow this road until it ends at the A470, turn right and follow this road all the way to Porthmadog.
OTHER TRAVEL
Porthmadog is served by both national rail and coach networks, routes and costs available from the respective websites.
The really adventurous could even sail and use one of the sailing club's guest berths!

Camping/Caravanning
Typically for North Wales the area is dotted with camping and caravansites. I have stayed at a few, including the campsites at Black Rock. My favourite is Tyddyn Llwyn on Black Rock Road, Porthmadog. It's walking distance from Porthmadog, and there is a walk from the camp site up to the peak of Borth Y Gest to see one of the best views in the area. Tyddyn Llwyn is open from March to October, Tel: 01766 512205 ...
