Come the afternoons and political speakers spout forth below the statue of a philospher, Giordano Bruno. Advantages: historic, good food, good weather, sexy men, awe-inspiring Disadvantages: your feet WILL hurt!
...or the area around CampodeFiori. The square itself has a number of bars and restaurants which mean you need not venture elsewhere. There are a number of gorgeous shops, with the designer ones on via Spagna just by the Spanish steps but if your credit card won't quite stretch that far then check out via Cavour and via Nazionale for some great shops (especially shoes!) However in walking round the back streets you can uncover cheaper and equally amazing shops. The city is rather spread out and it is possible to walk but take plenty of foot cream and plasters because your feet will hurt. There is a metro and bus service but these are renowned for pickpockets (and apparently gropers too!) so be careful, especially the No 64 bus which goes from the termini to St Peters. There is so much to see it is unlikely that you will be able to see it all on your...

...Since there already plenty of positive comments on Rome here, I thought it is better to give you some useful addresses. I start with my favourite, which is also a well know meeting spot for locals. It is a place where dei sell ice-creams: "Gelateria Giolitti" in Via degli Uffici del Vicario 40. If you are on business card, you can go to "Checchino dal 1887" in Testaccio, in Via di Monte Testaccio. testaccio is one of the traditional parts of the town and this restaurant is one of the best, not only in Rome, but in the whole country. A full meal will cost you around £40. Otherwise I recommend "Hosteria Romanesca" in CampodeFiori. A full meal including wine should cost you around £10. Otherwise, during the day you can just enter a shop where they sell food and ask them to prepare a sandwich for you with some local ham. Very cheap...
