What can you do in the Rocky Mountains in the summer?
Advantages: Scenery, activities, relaxation, middle of nowhere Disadvantages: Middle of nowhere
Jasper is a small town in Jasper National Park, in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. It is located on the very Western edge of the province of Alberta. There is a railway running through town and main roads out East to Edmonton and South to Banff. Tourism is the major industry here these days and much of the town is converted to hotels, camp sites, shops and tour operators to support this industry. We came here early in the summer and experienced its ... ...Although small in people, you will find that motorised transport is a necessary evil around here - there are many places to go visit, but unless you are being collected by a tour bus (which we frequently managed to do), you will need to get a cab everywhere if you haven't rented a car. We stayed in Jasper House bungalows when we visited. These were small self catering chalet style log cabins. At about £30 per person per night, these were extremely ...

Prince Edward County - A slice of Tranquility
Advantages: Peaceful, ecclectic, plenty to do, good weather, nice people, beautiful... Disadvantages: It isn't close enough to pop back for the weekend
Prince Edward County is a small County in Ontario, which has managed to remain relatively unscathed by development and urban society, although it is quickly climbing up the property ladder and being seen as a haven away from the day-to-day hustle of big cities like Toronto.
The County is an island on Lake Ontario and consists of 10 small towns:
Dereronto
Picton
Ameliasburgh
Cherry Valley
Milford
Bloomfield
Wellignton
Wapoos
Northport Condecon
... ...neighbours. What has Prince Edward County got to offer?
******************************************************
Please see the photos I have posted for a very limited taste of what County life is like.
Prince Edward County (PEC) is a cluster of small towns located within a small island part of Ontario, which offers visitors truly breath-taking scenery, friendly people (Canadians aren't very good at not being friendly) and plenty of things to do.

Part 3. A Canadian Adventure
Advantages: clean open spaces, excellent roads, amazing people Disadvantages: Too close to USA
Sunflowers and a plague of locusts.
After a long weekend's partying it was time for some suitable Canadian R&R, so back on the greyhound towards Saskatchewan, dropped of at Rosetown Junction picked up and given a lift to lake Diefenbaker, for a weeks lake fishing. This approach road to Diefenbaker is in serious need of a tarmac truck but this far from the main highways the chances are slim even if they could find there way out there. There are a ... ...mainly serving the workers from the vast vegetable fields that adjoin the lake along this shore, all GM varieties imaginable, all American owned I was led to believe, all through the summer you can see tens of thousands of gallons of water being constantly drawn from the lake. All to keep these non-native crops alive and flourishing, the worst aspect of all this is that the end product disappears straight out of Canada into the states and further, ...

Winnipeg: island of fun in a sea of prairie
Advantages: Lots to do, cheap eating, summer events Disadvantages: difficult to get to
Winnipeg is one of my favourite cities. Here are some of its features:
*********LOCATION/TRAVEL
Winnipeg is located in Manitoba, Canada. It has a population of about a million and has that small city feel: there is plenty to do but the people aren't hard-edged city types (at least the ones I've met). It's on the cross-Canada train line (www.viarail.ca), and has an international airport that several major airlines fly to. Winnipeg is the main city ... ...an hour north is Lake Winnipeg and the Icelandic town of Gimli (nothing to do with the Tolkien dwarf, as far as I know).
I haven't done this next thing, but I met a couple who had taken the train from Winnipeg two hours up to Churchill on the Hudson bay in late autumn to go polar-bear watching. It's on my list of things to do.
********PEOPLE
Beyond your average Canadians (who are perfectly nice), there is a considerable French-speaking community ...

Red sand and Green Gables
Advantages: Fabulous scenery, relaxed lifestyle, friendly atmosphere Disadvantages: Only way to see the island is to hire a car
Prince Edward Island (PEI) is an oasis of peace and tranquillity nestling just off the northern shore of Nova Scotia; it is also the smallest of Canada's provinces, but the 130,000 or so resident Islanders are justifiably proud of their home. It is with good reason that their island is known as 'The Garden of the Gulf' - the rolling hills and green fields that still cover much of it confirm that agriculture still plays an important role in the local ... ...every corner and the pace of life is very laid-back. You have the impression that nothing is rushed. There's always tomorrow...
Anyway, the island (like many other parts of the Canadian East) is named after a member of the British royal family: in this case the namesake was Prince Edward Augustus, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, the fourth son of King George III and the father of Queen Victoria. His title was actually the third name given to the island, ...
