Take a canal tour and get an overview of Amsterdam

Advantages: You get a leisurely cruise through the canals, and the guides are excellent at telling you the history of Amsterdam and pointing out interesting places and architecture
Disadvantages: bit blowy outside in cooler weather if youre on one of the open ones

If this is your first trip to Amsterdam, make it a top priority to take one of the daytime canalboat trips when you first get there. Some are large and seat maybe 50 people, others are smaller and take maybe 10 or 12, but they are an excellent overview of Amsterdam and it's history. Our guide gave us a running commentary in three languages, about the history and culture of the city, and pointed out numerous places of interest and idiosyncrasies along ...
...two hours long, and are a tranquil island in the hubbub of the hustle that is life in Amsterdam. We were enthralled by the different fascias of the buildings, marvelling at their age and ornate decorations in stone and wood. We learned why the houses are so tall and narrow, because the taxes were paid on the footage of the width. And we were also told that just because the front is old doe not mean the rest of the house is. When the foundations fail, ... more

A-maze-ing

Advantages: They're incredibly good for taking pictures to show the relatives
Disadvantages: None I can think of

...was going, purely as one canal street looks like the next. The canal tour provided a very welcome distraction. The tour I undertook was on a museum-boat, which is a service that runs from the middle of the city and around all it's key areas, in a state of total relaxation. As you travel along the canals, you can truly appreciate the strength and diversity of Dutch architeture, as well as hearing the city's history in either English, French or German ...
...advantage of using this line is that you can buy a day ticket, which means you can get on and off their boats as often as you like during that day, and simply have to queue at the stop for the next one. This enables you to make the most of the experience, as you get to hear the history of the attractions, then get to go and experience them for yourself. This also means, if you're unlikely to find somewhere again, you can get off to save you the trouble ...

the finest hotel in amsterdam

Advantages: beutifull water front setting, central location, quallity service
Disadvantages: expencive, a bit of a trek from centraal station if your on foot

When my girlriend and I where on a canal boat tour of amsterdam, our guide pointed out the pulitzer hotel as "the finest hotel in amsterdam" and I would have to agree with him. It's central enough that anything in the city centre is within walking distance, yet far enough away that the endless bragades of drunken idiots on hen and stag do's are not on your doorstep. so in short, if your going to amsterdam to experence the local culture and or the local coffie shop produce then the pulitzer is the place to stay, a bit pricy, but well worth it if this is a litle more pricy than you had expected, the hotel terminus is exelent aswell, but much cheaper, it has a more central location, but this brings with it the problems of stag do's / hen nights, but if you like to be right in the thick of it so to speak, this is an exelent choice. also ...

Review of Hotel Pulitzer, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Amsterdam

Read the diary and then visit the hiding place

Advantages: very moving, well-presented
Disadvantages: can get very busy, not accessible for people with walking difficulties

The Anne Frank House is well worth the visit if you are ever in Amsterdam. The house is Prinsengracht 263, and is easy to find as Amsterdam is very compact. Many of the boats touring Amsterdam's canals also stop off at the museum. Once inside the house you are shown a short video describing the anti-Jewish persecution of the Second World War, which led Anne, her family and four others to hide in the annexe of this remarkable building. Anne's father, Otto, ran a business in the front of the house, and the uppermost floors of the back annexe became their hiding place for over 2 years. Visitors follow a fixed route around the house, starting with the revolving bookcase that hid the entrance to the annexe. Once you enter the main living quarters you begin to appreciate how cramped, oppressive and frightening life for the eight ...

DAM fine n dirty

Advantages: Liberal, unique & friendly capital city, easy & cheap to get to.
Disadvantages: A bit grimy & sex shops are v.tacky, not for kids

of bars in Amsterdam, and some good ones too, mostly selling Heiniken & Amstel, for reasons which you may have figured out, I can't remember the names of any of the ones I went to ;D Attractions Loads to see & do. Anne Frank museum (Anne Frankhuis),a must if you've read the book. Visit the Museumplein to see the Rijks & Van Gogh Museum - very large & good if art is your thing, you could spend a day here. I'm not a great art fan but found the place interesting. There are loads of other museums too, which I haven't been to. The Heiniken brewery is fun, though its worth booking the day before you want to go as there is a limit to the amount of people that can go in. There are loads of canal tours, take your pick. Along with the tourist attractions, cafes & canals, perhaps the most famous thing for which most people come to Amsterdam , is ...
