In 1902 in Australia, it was decided that a national capital would be built and a stretch of land between the two arch rivals for the title, Melbourne and Sydney, was decided on. Canberra today is located about 200 miles from Sydney (about 3.5 hours drive) and 400 miles from Melbourne (about 7 hours drive). After an international competition to design the city, Walter Burley Griffin's design came out on top and Canberra started being built in 1913, making it less than 100 years old! The name of Canberra was decided upon as it is an aboriginal word meaning 'meeting place.' It has been referred to as the 'bush capital' and 'a bunch of suburbs in search for a city' because of its mass of bushland, parks and grassy areas and even masses of kangaroos hopping around!

It is certainly not your 'usual' capital city, think skyscrapers, millions of people, overcrowded, congested traffic etc. Canberra's population is less than 400,000, in comparison to Australia's biggest city Sydney which has 4 million. It takes half an hour to go right from the southernmost to the northernmost part of the city and rush hour isn't like any other capital city rush hour in that you still move and it only last an hour not three!

When you arrive, take yourself to the Canberra Visitors Centre which is on Northbourne Avenue about 2 miles north of the city centre. If you are coming from Sydney you have to go past it anyway so have a look in. They will be able to give you all the information you need on where to stay, free maps and what activities are on while you are there.

Because it was completely planned everything is so 'perfect.' The landmarks were built in line with each other so when you go to a lookout point you can see the important landmarks all laid out in front of you. For example, go to the top of Mount Ainslie for a great view of the city and the Australian war memorial will be right in front of you, then look down Anzac parade, across Lake Burley Griffin to Old Parliament House, the Aboriginal tent embassy and New Parliament House all in a perfect line! It gives a great view though and is free. For another birds eye view go to the top of Black Mountain which has a telecom tower at the top. It costs about $4 to go up but has a revolving restaurant and some great views over the city. Also no skyscrapers have taken over the city skyline so it doesn't really have a feel of a capital city, but that's what makes it so great!

Some of the main attractions for you to visit while you are there are:
"'Lake Burley Griffin"' - 35 km of bike paths and walkways around the shores of the lake, perfect for walking, swimming (although there are nicer places in Australia to swim!) and cycling. This is also a great place to see the Burley Griffin water jet (a jet that fires about 150 metres high) and the carillon (a large musical instrument (more like a building!) which was a gift from the UK presented by the queen) which plays every morning.
"'Parliament House and Old Parliament House"' - free guided tours run every day.
"'Australian War memorial"' - has a brilliant collection of military exhibitions and memorabilia. Free admission.
"'National Museum of Australia"' - also free admission, Showcases the land, nation and people through Australian eyes. Good for learning a bit about the place but not the best museum I have ever been.
"'National zoo and aquarium"' - pretty small by zoo standards. If you are going to Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane while you are in Australia, go to their zoos instead - especially Steve Irwin's zoo near Brisbane!
"'Australian Institute of Sport"' - provides training facilities and services to Australia's elite athletes. Tours run every day, last for an hour and a half and are run by the athletes themselves so you will meet one as your tour guide. Ours cover the sporting history, culture, training routines and diets and you can try out your own sporting abilities at the interactive Sportex exhibition. If you want to glimpse some athletes, do a tour during the week because it is dead at the weekend!
"'Questacon"' - approx $18. A hands-on science museum based on fun. For kids of ALL ages!

You can fly to Canberra from any other Australian city with Qantas or Virginblue, however, and this gives you a bit of an idea how small it is for a capital city, there are no international flights to or from Canberra. Buses run throughout the day and takes about 3hr 15 from Sydney. Go to murrays.com.au who normally have some good deals ($15 if you book early enough) or greyhound.com.au who have more services per day.

In conclusion, I love Canberra! I have lived here for a few years and really like the relaxed, laid-back atmosphere and the bush feel to it. It certainly doesn't feel like the hustle and bustle you would expect from a city, let alone a capital city. However as somewhere to visit, there is less to do than in the big cities but it is a good place to hang out and relax and visit some of the places I have suggested. If you are travelling from Sydney to Melbourne or vice-versa it is definitely worth stopping here for a couple of days just to experience it, because it really is nothing like anywhere else I have ever been!

I think a lot of people forget that Canberra is the capital city, it is that small and quiet! Ask most people, and they would probably say Sydney...
