Cancun is probably rightly considered to be the Mexican equivalent of the Ibiza/Costa del Sol/Mallorca holiday in Europe. Cancun is geared for toursim in every way. The hotels are clean and modern and filled with Germans, English and Americans. The sea is clear and the beach cleaned each day. Most hotels have a swimming pool and offer meals and entertainment as well as organized tours.
For those intending to discover "real" Mexico, it is perhaps all a bit too cosy and Americanized (there is a Hard Rock Café...). Still, Cancun is certainly a good base for exploring a little wider afield. There a offices representing the usual international car rental firms and you can take off on tours to the following sights (all of which are near enough to get there and back in one day):
- Chichén Itzá (Mayan ruin, perhaps the most famous) - Tulum (other Mayan ruin, directly on the coast) - Xcaret (eco-archaelogical park) - Xel-Ha (cove with fish)
I would certainly recommend leaving the "party and beach" atmosphere of Cancun to take a look at these wonderful places!

Advantages: A very good resort with lots of different attractions Disadvantages: Sometimes expensive, and a bit of a tourist trap. Take dollars ONLY for the airport tax.
