My husband had been to Tijuana on a short trip several years before and really fancied going to Cancun. I was in two minds about it as I suspected there would be nothing Mexican about it. Nevertheless, I was persuaded by the fact that they were doing package holidays with direct flights from Glasgow where we live.
Prior to leaving I had done some research on the internet but had found it quite hard to get any decent information on Cancun itself. There is plenty about the historical sites.
When we arrived in Cancun I was already annoyed by the time we had left the airport and had been told by our tourist guide that we would have to shell out around $45 each in airport taxes on leaving.
We chose a self catering holiday, which was a major mistake. The cost of food at the supermarkets was dearer than in the UK and we ended up spending a fortune. After a few days we found a little cafeteria in the downtown area which served workmen and local people and we ate in there most nights as the food was cheap and delicious. We only ate in 3 of the restaurants in the hotel zone because they were so expensive. On average we were paying £40 for a basic meal for 2 without drinks.
We found the trips to Chechen Itza and Tulum vastly overpriced at £60 on average. The trip to Chechen Itza was a bit disappointing as we had been lead to believe that we were going to have the opportunity to seeValladolid. We passed through this beautiful town but never stopped. Instead, the bus stopped at a 'tourist village' 10 minutes down the road which was an old, enclosed yard in the middle of nowhere selling t-shirts and other souvenirs at horrendous prices. We had tried to find local agencies selling trips at a better price but they all seemed to charge the same.
Everything in the hotel zone is expensive. I don't really know how any of the locals manage to buy t-shirts from places like the Hard Rock Cafe, or eat in any of the restaurants as they charge more there as they do in the UK, regardless of the cost of living. Perhaps there are different prices for the locals.
The one thing I did enjoy about our 2 week break was the scuba diving. We dived with a company called Nautilus Diving who were really excellent. The dives were all boat dives and they charged approximately $50 for 2 dives including equipment. They only took small numbers and the crew were really helpful. If it hadn't been for the diving I would have gone insane with boredom. It was the only thing that was value for money in Cancun.
If I could've got a flight home sooner I would have. I would never go to Cancun again unless I could afford to go all-inclusive and had just won the lottery because, unless you've got a lot of money to throw around you are not going to enjoy Cancun.

Advantages: 5* beach - when I went we even saw huge turtles coming out of the ocean in the night-time - amazing. Disadvantages: Can be expensive - we paid £1200 for 2 people for 2 weeks on a late deal 4/5 star all inclusive hotel.
