I have just got back from Cancun Mexico and I can honestly say its one of the best places I have ever been!!! We booked last minute and got an excellent deal, which we couldn’t turn down. When I was there Shaggy was there and snoop dog and MTV but I guess its because I was there when it was the Americans spring term.
Ok so the flight is 11hours and boring but it’s defiantly worth it. When we arrived in Cancunairport you could see the heat coming off the trees in the jungle below and right next to it you have downtown Cancun and the hotel zone. We were staying in the hotel zone, which took about 15min couch ride from the airport.
In Cancun they expect you to tip when you have a meal or if they bring you bags to your hotel room.
(I have nothing against Americans because I have American family but I guess its from them) J.
Anyway, In the hotel zone the hotels are right on the beach so this means you don’t have to walk miles just to get to the beach its just right outside your door.
Cancun is like a long island but attached to the mainland with a big lagoon in the middle.
There are plenty of things to do in Cancun you can go on the Booze cruises or you can go snorkelling or diving and this is especially good because Cancun have the 2nd largest barrier rife in the world! You can also go jet skiing and sailing all for about $40 for an hour.
In Cancun the money currency is in $ USD and Mexican Paso’s. Be warned though because both the USD and Paso’s have exactly the same symbol, so if you walk in a shop and buy some gum and it says $50 don’t worry because it means Paso’s J. Also be careful because if you dollar notes or Paso notes have hand writing on them or a rip they will not expect it.
Cancun is hot all year round so you don’t have to worry about not getting a Tan. Also the water around Cancun is the Caribbean Sea so expect to see white beaches palm trees and crystal clear water! I got back a few weeks ago and I went for 2 weeks but it’s defiantly worth staying longer for (if you can stand the heat anyway).
The local people are very friendly and will always be happy to help you if you need advice or if you need directions.
There are some brilliant real traditional restaurants as well which serve brilliant Mexican food and has a real Mexican spirit to it.
If you decide you want to get away from all the beaches or just go shopping down town, There is a local bus station and the bus’s run up and down Cancun every 5min or so, so you never have to wait for a bus and its $5 Pesos about 20p for the bus and you can go anywhere you want.
You cant avoid a good night out in Cancun there are plenty or nightclubs like Coco bongo, Liquid, Senior frogs, La boom and many many more. All of these have entry fees of $25 USD but its all drink as much as you like for free when you get inside. It’s defiantly worth going to one of these. There open all night and you can party all you like till like 6.00am and then still get a bus back to your apartment because they don’t stop running even during the night.
Downtown Cancun you have shops and markets and can buy some real nice stuff down there for a good price.
If you want to see more of a traditional side of Mexico though you can get on a bus to Tulum or anyway you want and go down the Aztec Ruins for the day, which really take you breath away. Tulum is one of the most impressive sights along the Mayan coast. The Tulum ruins were first discovered but the English explorers John l. Stephens and Fredrick catherwood in 1842.
If you feel like you want a day away from Cancun you can get on a ferry and go right over to the island Isla mujeres (island of the women) which is right opposite Cancun. It has an amazing beach along the north coast of the island. It’s a small island so you can walk around it and it has a real Caribbean feel to it. You can swim with the dolphins and sharks or go to the turtle farm. Also at the south end of the island you have another temple. You can hire like a gold buggy if you like for about $4000 pasos and drive around the island or you can just get a taxi or even walk. There are some good shops and really sweet Caribbean and Mexican style cafes and restaurants.
If you feel like watching a bull fight (I didn’t) then in Cancun near the airport they have a bull flight stadium and you can watch the bull fights every Wednesday.
There are plenty of things to do in Cancun and if you want some more advice just tell me and ill give it to you.
Cancun is the place to go!!!!

Nice detailed op. I have always fancied going there but have been slightly put off as I'd heard it's too Americanised.(is that a word?) However despite that I think I'll make the effort.

Advantages: 5* beach - when I went we even saw huge turtles coming out of the ocean in the night-time - amazing. Disadvantages: Can be expensive - we paid £1200 for 2 people for 2 weeks on a late deal 4/5 star all inclusive hotel.
