CANCUN, MEXICO
Fed up of cold weather? Need a holiday? Can't think of where to go? The holiday resort of Cancun on Mexico's Caribbeancoast is becoming increasingly popular with U.K. travellers each year, and with all it has to offer it is easy to see why. But Cancun has just lately developed a reputation of being a party-all-night, sleep-all-day sort of place. This is somewhat unfounded.
True enough, there is a host of night clubs and bars for the more nocturnal of folk, but Cancun can quite easily accommodate those who want nothing more than a relaxing holiday soaking up solar rays on the beach. Of course there is room for something in between too. The beaches on the island of Cancun, together with the turquoise Caribbean Sea, make the place special. Fine white sand (that doesn't get hot even in the searing midday heat), and warm clear waters make being a beach bum a real option. But for those who want a bit more there is plenty to go at.
Snorkelling or diving off Cancun is recommended. The sort of fish and coral you might expect to see in an aquarium back home, are actually within touching distance, and the vivid colours of the marine life must be seen to be believed. First time snorkellers will be amazed, the only thing to be wary of is the reef itself, which will cut you if you brush past it as you swim. Popular snorkel
sights are near Isla Contoy and Xcaret.
Contoy is Mexican national park island that is a sanctuary to a host of wild birds. Just a couple of hours boat trip way Contoy is a peaceful, beautiful place where Mother Nature must have smiled on, beautiful bird life with the coral reef just a few hundred metres away.
Cancun is an island in the shape of a number seven, which is connected to the mainland by excellent road bridges, so you really wouldn't know your on an island. Travel south from Cancun for about an hour and you will find the Eco-Park of Xcaret, where snorkellers can weave their way through caves in underground rivers, for a unique and unforgettable experience.
Water sports really are a feature of Cancun. Wind surfing, and jet skiing is popular, as is parasailing. Parasailing is an unusual experience, starting with the take off. It seems so chaotic as the boat that your parachute is attached to starts to move and you are thrust into the air, wind blowing in your face as you climb higher and higher.
However, when you finally stop ascending and reach your cruising altitude, everything goes calm. Gently gliding along, looking out to sea on one side, and viewing the green lagoon on the other, with all the luxury hotels right beneath you. You can literally see for miles as you drift along, and then come down to land, which isn't nearly as nerve wracking as you might think.
Many tourists from the U.K. go on "all inclusive" packages when they stay in Cancun, and it's no real surprise when you see the standard of hotel that are on offer. Most hotels are right on the beach, (although some face the lagoon) and have at least one swimming pool. All meals, snacks, drinks and entertainment are included, so it possible to have a great holiday and not leave the grounds of the hotel.
Quality of service are incredibly high, being so close to the U.S.A., many American visitors stay - and they expect good service. Another feature of hotels in Cancun, is the never seem to crowded, even when they are full. This could well be due to the fact that they are so big.
Thirty years ago Cancun was a tiny undeveloped fishingvillage, but when developers moved in at the behest of the Mexican government, hotels were built, and they built big. Because of this there seems plenty of room, not having hotels right on top of each other, a even though the buildings are spread out, no-where is ever too far away because of the excellent bus service.
But surely, if you're going to Mexico you'll want to see something other that a beach, won't you? Well, many people visit the Yucatan Peninsula see the ancient Mayan ruins, of Tulum, Uxmal or Chichen Itza.
Whilst the lost city of Chichen Itza is a three of four our drive inland, it is still worth a visit, as it is probably the most impressive Mayan site in Mexico. On arrival you will feel the temperature increase, as there is not the cool Caribbean breeze you find in Cancun. Stretching 30 metres high is the Temple of Kukulcan is the first and maybe most impressive sight to see. This is the pyramid which you have seen hundreds of times before in guide books and the like, but seeing for the first time is something else.
When standing at the base of the temple, you realise just how steep the steps are, and anyone with an ounce of adventure in them, just has to climb the ninety-one steps to the top. The reward for the strenuous climb is a wonderful view. There are so many ruins to see at Chichen Itza, you may feel need more than a single day trip there. With the Temple of the Warriors, the Observatory, and the Ball Park just some of the sights, a second day may make things a little less whistle stop, plus it would give you the chance to see the city illuminated at nighttime. All told Chichen Itza makes your mind race, you think how interesting history really can be (despite what you thought at school), and what an excellent location it would be for an Indiana Jones film, certainly novelist David Morrell was inspired by Chichen Itza in his book "Assumed Identity" which has a gruesome conclusion to the story in the Ball Park.
You don't have to visit any tourist attractions to get out and about though. The restaurants, bars, and shopping malls are worth taking a look at. Even if you stay all inclusive, it is still nice to have a meal or two during your stay, and the variety of places to eat is vast. Cuisines from all around the world are available, from burger bars to heath food diners; the choice is yours as familiar places like Planet Hollywood mix side by side with small Tex-Mex cantinas.
Bars and nightclubs are like most things in Cancun, big. Bars with weird names like Senor Frogs and Carlos 'N Charlie's, serve up fantasy cocktails and bizarre drinking games for those who are willing.
While a certain portion of holidaymakers head off to the bars, many of the more, shall we say mature visitors head off to the malls for a spot of shopping. Complexes similar to those at Merry Hill or Trafford are scattered around the island, which are an oasis of cool air on sticky humid night. Air-conditioned and spotlessly clean, the Playacol and the Kukulcan malls, sell a wide range of souvenirs at reasonable prices, with tee shirts and silver jewellery among the most popular purchases. True enough, you can buy goods from beach sellers or from the market, but then there is no guarantee with what you buy, so for buying silver it's probably best to make sure it is authentic and buy it from a respectable jeweller in one of the malls.
After your shopping, you could take in a film at the malls' cinema, as long as you don't mind having Spanish sub-titles as well as the dialogue in English. Then head back to your hotel for a Pina colada as you watch the huge silver moon shine down on the sea.
On the whole, Cancun would seem to be a place where all sorts of different types can go and enjoy a vacation there. Great beaches, wonderful examples of Mayan culture, superb hotels, high quality service, excellent shopping and nightlife that rocks. All this plus hot sunny weather, and in the main very friendly people who like to chat. Go to Cancun, or anywhere in Mexico for that matter, and you will be sure take at least a part of it to your heart.
