Canterbury Cathedral

Canterbury Cathedral

Well as my Dover castle review seemed to go down rather well with ratings received, and this is a rather local attraction to me, I thought I would do a review won Canterbury cathedral. I can view this beautifully from my office window on my construction site, which I think is a privilege really. History ... Read review

History of the Cathedral
Well I should think most people know something about the cathedral and its history but I will merely scratch the surface of it in this review im sure?

The Cathedral was founded in 597AD by St Augustine who landed on the ...
...was given a site in Canterbury to set up his church and this was St Martins, which still stands today.

This was given to him by the then King of England Ethelbert. This Church was used throughout the Roman occupation and in fact is still in use today!

St Augustine’s original building now lies deep below the floor of the Cathedral nave, and it was rebuilt and enlarged greatly by the Saxons.

The cathedral ... more

The Reviewer's Tale (Act 3)

Advantages: History, Architecture, Good visitor facilities
Disadvantages: Pricey to get in, Pay extra for tour, Crowded

I was in Canterbury in early May to attend a conference at Kent University, but I couldn't very well come all this way and not visit the Cathedral. I will make it clear from the outset that I am not religious; this was not a pilgrimage, but more an opportunity to indulge my love of history and my growing respect for architecture. For those of you who have read my other Canterbury Reviews, you may recall that I did not particularly enjoy Canterbury ...
...visit! Founded in 597AD, Canterbury Cathedral is the Mother Church of the Anglican Communion. The first Archbishop of Canterbury was St Augustine, sent by Pope Gregory the Great himself; the story goes that the Pope had seen "Angle" (English) slaves for sale in a market in Rome and was struck by their beauty, remarking that they were "not Angles but Angels". Such a people, he was convinced, should be converted to Christianity, and so he ordered ...

Canterbury Cathedral - a fascinating building...

Advantages: Much more to see than you'd believe
Disadvantages: Can get a bit busy

Well, first things first - we were quite lucky when we went to Canterbury Cathedral: we were shown round by my cousin, who works for the Cathedral itself. But don't panic if your cousin doesn't work for the Cathedral - because there are guided tours available for anyone who wants to go in. Just look for the notice at the Welcome Centre. We used to live near York, and, naturally, York Minster was somewhere we'd been before. Well, look, this is NOTHING like York Minster. It's a huge site, much larger than the Minster, and because it was part of a monastery in the past, it's quiet and away from the traffic (unlike the Minster, as you'll know if you've been there). We were quite lucky when we went round; because there was a wedding going on in the crypt, we couldn't go in there, so we decided to go to the pub for lunch and come back ...

Review of Canterbury (England)

Wonderful to visit

Advantages: Plenty of things to see
Disadvantages: Can be crowded in season

I love Canterbury. Wherever you go there is a piece of history, from the magnificent catheral, to the city walls, to the very modern animated figures depicting Chaucer characters in the Canterbury Tales attraction. The Cathedral and the Canterbury Tales are both well worth a visit although both can get crowded at times. The shops are wonderful either for quality goods or for picking up a souvenier of your visit. Most of the main names are there and several speciality shops as well. Plenty of places to eat and all in all a great place to visit. ...

Review of Canterbury (England)

A Journey Through History

Advantages: Interesting attraction, unique, cheap entrance
Disadvantages: Audio packs can leave you with arm ache!

I only live a fifteen minute drive from Canterbury but I have only visited the Canterbury Tales once and that was about five years ago. About The Canterbury Tales For those of you that have never heard of The Canterbury Tales, they are a collection of stories that were written in the 14th century by Geoffrey Chaucer. Inside this attraction, the collection of tales are told by the pilgrims who are on a pilgrimage from London to Canterbury to visit the shrine of Saint Thomas Beckett which is in Canterbury Cathedral. Chaucer wrote the tales in Middle English with two of them in prose and the rest in verse and in The Canterbury Tales attraction they are still spoken in this way. Location The Canterbury Tales is located in the middle of the City of Canterbury and about a five minute walk from Canterbury Cathedral. The train station ...
