This is one of the two animal park owned by the late John Aspinal. John was a great man with two passions....gambling and wild animals. He used his gambling to pay for his love of animals and what a fantasic result. John's aim has always been to breed endangered animals and release them back into the wild which he has achieved with great success. His great passions were the gorrillas and the tigers.
A vast majority of the park is taken up with different breeds of monkies and gorrillas. There are also tigers, elephants and wolves and many more endangered animals. The most unusual thing abiut Howletts though has to be the fact that the keepers do actually go in with the animals and have physical contact with them. I know that keepers have been killed over the years, but these men have a passion to and they know the risks. The park has recently been taken to court by the local authority because of this, but after a long battle, I am pleased to say that the park won.
If you are ever close to Canterbury, it really is worth going to see Howletts. I can spend all day there just watching the gorrillas in their brilliant new enclosure!
If you cant make it down there in persom then have a look at the website (www.howletts.net). They have got some brilliant web cams so you can have a look for yourself.
