I have recently returned to Bonnie Scotland after spending a year in Canterbury. Although it could hardly be held on a par with 'A Year in Provence' it was certainly enjoyable.

Getting There
------------------
I don't like to start with a negative, but getting to Canterbury, isn't the easiest. Situated in deepest, darkest Kent the nearest airport is London Gatwick though London Stansted is also a reasonable option. Getting a train to Canterbury will probably involve a change in train in London which is not fun at rush hour with two large suitcases. I have to admit I am not too sure about buses. I think that would involve a change in London too. To be honest, not the most environmentally method, but probably easiest is by car. Canterbury is found at the end of the M2. A relatively quiet road, the route is generally clear after you tackle the M25.

Accommodation
----------------------
Okay, I'll get most of the bad points out of the way from the offset, but keep reading, it gets better. Having lived in Canterbury I did not have to avail myself of the local hostelries. Some research concludes that this is an area Canterbury is somewhat lacking. Although Canterbury is a bit of a tourist trap, it tends to be day-trippers due to the lack of local accommodation (although from what I can tell the hotels Canterbury does have are very nice).

Attractions
--------------
Well number one on that list is the spectacular Canterbury Cathedral. It is quite simply stunning (and if you go on Sunday morning is free to get in, though some parts are closed off for services), the architecture is amazing and has such a rich history it can keep you occupied for a few hours.
The Canterbury Tales is an interactive attraction where certain stories from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales are told via moving exhibitions. To be honest this is a bit expensive for what it is.
About 30 minutes drive from Canterbury is Howlett's Wild Animal Park (not a zoo, don't call it a zoo, they don't like it if you call it a zoo!). Full of many different animals, fun for all ages.

Going Out
--------------
Canterbury is full of bars. There is the cheep n' cheerful Wetherspoons and the more expensive wine bars. Gay bars and more traditional pubs all situated within 5 minutes walk of each other. The problem comes when you want to go to a club. The only options are The Works (full of neds/chavs) and Studio 41. That being said, Canterbury is great for a night out.

Shopping
-------------
All the usual high street shops plus smaller independant shops. On Saturdays there is a market on the Main Street.

Surrounding Area
------------------------
East Kent is a lovely place. It has beautiful countryside, sea side towns (Margate), quaint villages (Sandwich), international ports (Dover). All of these places are only a train ride from Canterbury.

Conclusion
---------------
I like Canterbury, it might be too small for some people but for me it was just right. The only bad point that I could see was the difficulty in getting back up to Scotland.
