We booked a day trip to capri with a representative from our hotel (we were staying at the Excelsior Vittoria Hotel) in Sorrento this trip cost approx £50.00 per person.
We got the hydrofoil from the marina piccolo which takes about twenty to thirty minutes or so. As we approached Capri I was amazed at the view of elegant brightly coloured buildings and tropical trees and plants it really does take your breath away and looks a bit like Balamory with all the beautiful colours and shapes, I think you will see what I mean on the photo's.
~ AnaCapri ~
We got a minibus to AnaCapri which is the island's second (Ana-means other), quieter town with lovely little white houses halfway up the slopes of Monte Solaro (which is the highest point on capri), one of the highlights
for me was the scenic chairlift from piazza vittoria. A bit like a ski lift but much higher up, two italian men helped you on you sort of stand there and sit on whilst it's still moving (slowly). You don't have a belt but a bar goes across the front of your chair ( you are quite high up some people would find this scary). I loved it it was exilarating and some of the views from the chair lift are amazing. You actually go above and over peoples gardens, and it was really interesting to see all the different religious artefacts and statues in their gardens. The chair lift takes you to the top of Monte Solaro which takes about 15 minutes there is a lovely little cafe at the top were you can purchase food and drink.
Coming down I heard lots of noise and a wailing sound as I got closer I realised it was a well built lady who was rocking from side to side in her chair and shouting "Bruno Bruno I afraid get me down". Well this was so funny I couldn't stop laughing and nearly fell out of my chair lift (everybody else on chair lift seemed to be laughing at this lady as well). To this day I feel guilty about laughing so much and wonder how that poor lady got down.
~ Capri Town ~
Dominating the eastern side of the island, the capital has its centre one of the mediterranean's most fashionable meeting places, Piazza Umberto1, better known as the Piazzetta, which is more like a courtyard than a square.
We sat at a cafe looking across at the clock tower and the quaint baroque Santo Stefano church. The square offers an escape from the madding crowds just two minutes away, in it's maze of little arcaded lanes and shops. Here I got chance to practise my limited Italian at a cafe/restaurant:
di vino bianco Pronounced dee vee'no bee'ankoh Two glasses of white wine
paga il mio amico pronounced pag'ah eel mee'oh am'ee'co please my friend is paying
Ciao pronounced Chow Hello
Arriverderci Aree'veh'dair'chee Goodbye
This got a laugh and two very large glasses of chilled white wine (dry and refreshing). The waiter also brought a large bowl of black olives, a bowl of green olives and a bowl of small salted biscuit's (a bit like pretzels) . This cost about £12.00 and even though its pricey it was worth it. We sat for half an hour and relaxed. Capri's little Piazzetta is one of the best known squares in Italy and is a great place to sit and relax and do a bit of people watching.
~ Parco Augosto-The Gardens Of the Emperor Augustus ~
The garden's of the Emperor Augustus offer splendid views over the Certosa di San Giaciomo the harbour of Marina Piccola and the great Faraglioni rocks out in the bay. It was a clear sunny day when we were there and the views were breathtaking.
There was a lot more we wished we could have seen but we ran out of time and we had to make a dash to catch the funicular railway back down to the harbour. We would have liked to have visited the Blue Grotto, Villa Jovis and I would love to go on the chairlift again, maybe next time.
