Hertz - probably the worst car hire company in the world Advantages: None Disadvantages: Not properly informed about CDW & excess, massively overcharged for repairs ...of a car hire with Hertz in Germany. That is to say that the car itself was fine, booking it on line and collecting it was OK. However, you do need to be very aware of the small print which caught me out to the tune of Euros 700. I booked and prepaid for the car on-line where there is a bold heading that says that all on-line bookings include CDW. My problems began here as I did not read every word on the Terms and Conditions and so missed the important ... ...the vehicle I notified the Hertz representative that there had been some damage to the vehicle and was told then that I did not have insurance. She told me then that there was a Euro 700 in place and that they would be in contact to tell me how much the repair would be. I received an email the next day with the invoice to find out that Hertz had charged the whole amount on the excess to my card. I immediately called the customer service help line ... Paid 681 $ /441 € for one night rental car!!!! Advantages: none Disadvantages: Unbelievable customer policies! Unfriendly. Short term money is more worth than a satisfied customer. Very poor customer policies! Alamo really surprised us with very strange business ethics! To sum up my experience: Alamo personnel give customers false information (about reimbursement and about car details). Alamo cannot handle special requests (we needed a special car and tried to solve this in advance). Alamo rather takes short term money instead of building a long term relationship with a satisfied customer. The whole story: We made a reservation ... ...this special car we phoned Alamo in Reno in advance which car to book and explained that we definitely need this car type and no other. They told us we need a Full Size SUV and promised us that this is no problem. Once being there it turned out that the Full Size SUV hat no stow & go function. Unfortunately, we got into Reno with the last flight, so being back at the Alamo station we found this station already closed and everybody gone. Gold Car. The.Scam continues Advantages: none Disadvantages: none Like your correspondent from 2007, I rented a car from Gold Car at Murcia Airport in October 2009 and experienced precisely the same problems ehe did two years earlier...a long queue to get the car, the non-option of having to pay top dollar for a full tank of petrol with the ridulous and impossible instruction to "return it empty". And then found my rental was seriously scratched and dented. I went back to the counter to report the damage and was ... ...okay and the glass is not broken, that's okay". It's advice that I will take literally when I next hire in Spain.I'll ignore Gold Car and their scam of charging for fuel that the renter doesn't use and for renting out cars that should be undergoing repair in some garage. ... Carjet - don't use this company Advantages: Cheap but beware if you have a problem Disadvantages: Poor customer service who keep missing the point ...they are having financial difficulties. Carjet sent a bulk email to cancel the reservation which went to my junk email box - I therefore didn't find it! Arrived at Palma airport late at night without knowledge of the cancellation and was only able to find a very expensive tiny car for my family including 2 small children - made the holiday very difficult and stressful. Europcar + HolidayAutos.co.uk TERRIBLE Advantages: None - both Europcar and holidayautos.co.uk are con merchants Disadvantages: Totally unhelpful HOLIDAYAUTOS.CO.UK and EUROPCAR stink. I was forced to upgrade my hire car at Granada airport as another child travelled with us at the last minute and was told by the Europcar spanish staff in broken English that the price of the new car would be 292 euros. The already charged price of 170 euros would be subtracted from this I would only pay the balance ( 122 euros ). I booked the original car through holidayautos.co.uk. On my return my credit ... ...car for 170 euros I would then agree to pay another 292 euros to accomodate a small child. I would have simply asked an adult member to get a taxi for a fraction of the cost. EUROPCAR misinformed me and HolidayAutos.co.uk have been totally unhelpful. Use either at your peril. ...
