Carcassonne

Carcassonne, classed as World Heritage, and national monument since 1997, is known world wide for it's Cathare "cité". It's not easy to describe, but I'll do my best : Imagine a small town, built in the IVth century. This town has it's cathedral, (built later, by the Cathares), and ... Read review

Carcassonne is an hour drive away from where i live. I've actually driven close by many a time, admiring it's vast and impressive fortress each time. I've always told myself I'd visit it one day.

Why such hesitation? To be honest, i hate crowds. And seeing as the whole world knows Carcassonne, ...
...I recently found out that Carcassonne has 2 million visitors a year, from all destinations.

Of course there are more or less crowded moments in the year, going from a slow moving crowd to a completely stagnant jam. I went on the 14th of May, I'd say that's mid-season.

COME FOR TEA IN MY CASTLE.

Advantages: Beautiful place.
Disadvantages: None at all.

I visited Carcassonne this year and I think that it is an experience that is worth sharing with my friendly Ciao companions, because I notice that Ryanair do cheap flights to Carcassonne and thus that a visit there by people from England is very cheap and quite a viable proposition. Carcassonne is a Medieval Town, housed in the walls of a castle. Imagine living there, it would be a super address to have in France. I wish that I could add photographs ...
...arches that take you into Carcassonne that you are living a part of history. This town is alive and thriving, whilst steeped in past. The outer wall of the city was built between 1228-1245 and surrounds the ancient ramparts which were built in Roman times. The wall is impressive and houses the entirety of the village within its 1600 metres which runs around the perimeter of a hill, making the castle both impressive and defensively superior to lower ...

Carcassone, always in my heart

Advantages: Just Awesome
Disadvantages: Having to leave

This is a place you MUST visit. There is so many places to see within the Castles walls. You can visit the museum of torture (not quite as gruseome as it sounds) or purchase gifts from the shops which sell everything from locally produced ornaments (made from nuts & bolts) to daggers. There are plenty of places to choose from to eat, with the normal laid back and very pleasant French way. The views are amazing from the castle walls and just being ...
...of Theives (with Kevin Costner) did some filming there. If you are not a great fan of walking around, you can get on a little train so you can look at your leisure. When I went in July, the weather was fantastic, sun cream definitely needs applying liberally. It is sad to leave the place, but it is somewhere you can enjoy going back to again and again. Definitely on my list for next year. ...

Best Western Le Donjon Les Ramparts certainly not Best Value

Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Split into different buildings, expensive.

Travelling through France to northern Spain we decided to spend a night at the medieval city of Carcassonne in the Languedoc area. First Impressions From a distance the walled city looked stunning, but to be perfectly honest that was the best bit. For those of you that have visited and enjoyed your stay I will apologise now but we absolutely hated it, if I had wanted a theme park I would have gone to Disneyland! The city was full of the most horrendous ?tat? gift shops selling everything from fake suits of armour to tee-shirts with knights on them and really awful ?attractions? (I use this word loosely) such as the haunted manor and weapon museum. It was a little better at night when the shops had closed and the restaurants opened, however, teenagers staying around the city became very bored, got very drunk and succeeded in ...

Cathare country Airport

Advantages: It's in Carcassonne
Disadvantages: Not many flights

Salvaza Airport, locally known as the airport of Carcassonne, "pays Cathare", is situated 4 kilometres west of Carcassonne, just by the Narbonne-Toulouse motorway. There is a commercial zone just next to it, with a supermarket, furniture shop, MacDonald's, and a few hotels. The first thing that is striking when you reach the airport, is its small size. 100 square metres altogether with the departures, and arrival areas. ₪ ₪ ₪ ₪ ۝₪ ₪ ₪ ₪ ۝₪ ₪ ₪ ₪ ۝₪ ₪ ₪ ₪ ۝₪ ₪ ₪ ₪ ۝₪ ₪ ₪ ₪ There is a car park in front of the terminal, and another next to it. Review of Carcassonne Airport, France

nothin' special: They are stuck in the middle

Advantages: new, comfortable aircraft, monopoliees at important hubs, good online check-in facility
Disadvantages: Very expensive, aggresive and arrogant towards competition, cold

passengers to fly in one stop from Exeter to Stornoway or Southampton to Benbecula. However, as an airline enthusiast, I see this partnership as a poor attempt to compete with the smaller regional airlines such as Manx2, Aurigny, Blue Islands and most importantly Eastern Airways who had to close their Inverness hub due to Flybe's decision to start flights on all of Eastern's routes to Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol and Southampton imminently. Last year, I actually used Flybe for one leg of my journey to stay with my friends in Carcassonne. Flybe fly into Toulouse from Birmingham and Perpignan from Southampton and Exeter. My brother and I were due to fly to perpignan from Southampton on a Wednesday in August with my parents arriving later by car train from calais. Unfortuneately, complications regarding my brother's passport ...
