Make sure and stay for to view the sunset - it is terrific. Also why not wait and go for a dip after dark. It is creepy but rather fun.
Good facilities (for Venezuela) and water sports are also available..
Advantages: Cool water, facilities Disadvantages: Lack of shade - get scorched
IN the area of Puerto Cabello, I would definately recommed that you visit Playa Quizandal. Follow the signs for "Hospital Militar" and "Diques" and you will end up in the middle of nowhere - at a very nice beach...
It is a large beach with quite good facilities, including somewhere to buy food, bathrooms, showers - but with no water! The beach is usually clean and the water is terrific. Some good waves here, especially in the evening...

Advantages: cheap, wam, quiet Disadvantages: hard to reach, no big comfortable hotels
When i was in Venezuela, after trekking and visiting the sites i decided to relax for a few days on the coast. However it was difficult to pick a good place, so i followed the Venezuelans to what for them Cornwall is for us. The place was called Puerto Columbia and is reached by bus, albeit rather long and uncomfortable. However it is worth the journey. On one side of the bay there are bars, clubs and hotels and on the other side the beach and some ... ...but they are sufficient and prices are so cheap - 3 pounds for a meal and 4 for a night in a hotel. In terms of theings to do there is plenty. The number one attraction is the beach, white sands, palm trees, prestine ocean and sun are the essential mix here. On the other side of the bay a market visits once a week from teh carribean islands and brings an extra spice to the area with a great atmosphere (usually at night). Excursion can also be taken ...

turtles. Further south lies the Cahuita National Park and the villages of Cahuita and Puerto Viejo with their living coral reefs and mineral black beaches. The major city of Puerto Limon lies in a central position and splits the coast into two quite distinct regions.
South of Puerto Limon (Cahuita National Park and surrounds)
This is very much a Caribbean style of place located on the south eastern coast (about 45km southeast of the major city of Puerto Limon) and having a very laid-back atmosphere and relaxed cultural diversity. The protected parkland area contains coastal rainforest and lowlandsemi-mangrove with much wildlife including sloths, snakes, crabs and howler monkeys. It also includes one of the few living coral reefs in Costa Rica - about 500m offshore and this is a particularly popular area for snorkelling.

. The first one I read was for a remote resort called Turtle Beach Lodge, situated in Tortuguero on the Caribbeancoast. We arranged with the hotel they would hold our luggage while we went on the 3 day trip. We were told the only way to get to Tortuguero was by bus and boat or by plane. We opted for the bus and boat as this was much cheaper and we would also get to see some of the surroundings.
The coach picked us up at 6.30 am the next day and we started the long journey to Tortuguero. We took a drive through Braulio Carrillo National Park, which is a wet cloud forest. It was damp and dark and sort of mysterious but with waterfalls and plantlife it was also very beautiful. We soon came out at the end of the Park to brilliant sunshine, the contrast was amazing. We stopped on the way to have breakfast and also at the Del Monte banana ...
