...I am a spanish speaker and often visit Spain, however mainly to Madrid. This time I thought that I would visit Barcelona, since people alwasy seem to rave and rave about how amazing it is. I will try and summarise the place in several key factors:
Transport: Generally pretty good - tube is clean, easy, bit hot occasionally which is the last thing you need in the Spain heat! bus service from the airport to the centre of town is easy and very cheap (about 2 euros).
Accomodation: Depends obviously on your budget, but the top hotel 'The Carlton' is very nice and well located, otherwise middle range hotels are pletniful and there are also some very reasonable 'low budget hotel's (for about 20 euros a night) right in the centre and on the main plazas.

Advantages: Opulent, near the Guggenheim, best in town Disadvantages: only that there's not more reason to go more often
...The first time I stayed at the Carlton it was entirely accidental. I had flown from Madrid to Bilbao with a Spanish colleague probably 10 years ago and our flight was so late that the hotel where we had bookings had given our rooms away to someone else. It was late, we were tired and grouchy and they offered to find us 2 rooms somewhere else. The Carlton - being the best (and most expensive) hotel in town - had two rooms. We rolled up in the wee small hours of the morning, paid an arm, a leg and a few other body parts and spent no more than about 6 hours in our rooms before heading off in the morning.
HOWEVER, the Carlton was so beautiful and the rooms so lovely that I vowed that one-day I'd go back and that's exactly what I did.

Advantages: An exciting city Disadvantages: can get hot in the summer
...Madrid is a great place for couples or friends on a short city break.
If you are looking at staying in Madrid you could do a lot worse than take a look at the Hotel Regina. The hotel is a 3 star establishment on Calle Alcala, which runs directly into the centre of the city at Puerto del Sol. In fact this hotel is little more than 300 yards from the centre of Madrid.
I stayed in a single room (though it had two single beds!) for around £40 per night in March 2001. For that I got the room, ensuite bath with over the bath shower, toilet and sink, cable tv including pay per view movies, cnn, eurosport and sky news, a radio, and an alarm clock.
A buffet breakfast was also included. I was able to choose from cereals, coffee and tea, orange juice, doughnuts, croissants, rolls with jams and butter, and a selection of meats.
When you...
