It was advertised in the "Aussie Backpacker" magazine, so I assumed it would be suitable for a weekend stay in the city as part of a backpacking trip around Australia. What a mistake! We had unfortunately just handed over our payment when I noticed a "No refunds on accomodation" sign. When we went upstairs the hotel looked like a set from the NYPD Blue Tv show. It was basically a drop in centre for all of the local drunks and prostitutes. One of their selling points was a 24hr bar, the music from which could be heard throughout the hotel until 5am. The toilets were worse than the "worse toilet in the World" scene from "Trainspotting", and was the only place in Australia I saw a cockroach. When we checked out, the bar boucers blocked the doorway until the barman had signalled that we had paid. A nightmare weekend. The centre of Melbourne only has 5* hotels or no star hotels. I am lead to believe that the St Kilda district is better for a economy or mid range stay.
