In september 2000 I was invited to the presentation of OPEL´s new car called Corsa. I was surprised that they did this presentation not in germany, but in Cannes, France. Famous, some of you might ask and I say yes, famous it is. Most of you know that european film festival every year at Cannes. That hotel there is that historic building in which all the major actors, directors and plenty of wannabe´s are staying.
The building itself is under a historic building law in france and so to uphold business in there the owners have to spent lots of money quite frequently to rebuild the beautiful historic outside of the hotel.
It has 7 floors and on ground level you find a restaurant, a bar and several shops. right across the street is the Carlton Intercontinental private beach, with a beach bar, where they prepered a large buffet with sea food and sushi as well, for the arriving OPEL customers.
The rooms are in a good size, not to big, but not too small either. On each floor there are also suites for the most priveledged or generous spenders. I said spenders on purpose, because that hotel really is the most expensive I´ve ever been in. For our normal room on the 5th floor they charged $550 per night.
Just for fun I looked on the price list for the minibar. And it just shocked me. A small bottle of water $8 a bottle of beer $15 and so on. Even Peanuts were not affordable at $8. I guess from my words you can see that I never took any of these things. I was just so glad that OPEL paid for the stay there, at this price I would have preferred to sleep on the beach...
But for everybody with the right amount of cash in the wallet, this is an excellent hotel. The service is mostly trilangual (french, german and englisch of course)and they are really polite. They also check the rooms a couple of times per day, not only once to clean up and fix the bed, like in most other hotels I know.
The Hotel itself has a great view to the waterfront and especially with all those huge boats out there it is just one amazing view. It also has a swimming pool and fitness club inside on the 7th floor to suit all the needs of their guests.
On the private beach you can either lay down on your towel, but, because there is not very much room for that you have to rent chairs & stuff and they are expensive, too. Not far away from that hotel you will find the Palais d`Festival, where they have these celebrations every year, and the elder city as well with plenty of nice restaurants. They have a great selection of food and wine from the Provence region and seafood as well. And that at really affordble prices. I will gladly recommend `Pacific Express`(it ain´t as bad as it might sound) to everybody thinking of visiting Cannes.
I had a great time there, even though I was just staying there for 3 days for that presentation and I will recommend to at least see that historic hotel (18th century building I think) at least once when you´re around.
Advantages: the only place to stay in Cannes Disadvantages: Probably not the most family friendly if your children aren't used to hotels.
Le Carlton is an institution in Cannes! It is an amazing hotel with history back to the beginning of the 1900's. It was occupied by the Germans during the second world war. The two points on either side of the hotel were shaped after a woman's breasts. Just this information shows you that it is a hotel of immense history and character. The staff are the highest paid hotel staff in Cannes and possibly the Cote d'Azur and it shows in the quality of ...
