...Introduction

During this time of year my mind often harks back to warmer climates and more pleasant surroundings. Imagine sipping a cocktail and watching the sunset with a view across the ocean listening to the sound of fruit bats as they come out to feed. Such a memory is that of the Dutch Antilles, known locally as ABC (Bonaire, Curaçao and Aruba).
Bonaire and Curaçao, and to a lesser extent, Aruba, feature prominently in States-side diving magazines as very desirable diving destinations, and a number of specialist UK tour operators now offer those on a standard package basis. Both Bonaire and Curaçao are very easily accessible via a short hop from the UK to Amsterdam and onwards with Dutch carriers KLM and Martinair, the flight time from Amsterdam being about 11 hours.

Advantages: You can complete the ABC Disadvantages: Not much to remember
...Bonaire belongs to what is called the tropical "ABC". What is this ABC about? ABC means
Aruba,
Bonaire,
and Curacao.
Bonaire is of the three the less prepared for tourists, and if we have to put them in order, the ABC would be more an acb.
Bonaire IS worth a day trip that you can do either from Aruba or from Curacao. In addition, you will notice that Bonaire is the earth of the locals, maybe that is why their nightlife is much more relax than their neighbours.
If you choose one this day trips you'll have a meal included either in the ship or in one of the tourist restaurants. Choose the second one, the meal worth it, rather than a silly sandwich you can enjoy a tasty fresh fish while the Caribbean music is played live.
And is highly recommendable to choose the option that includes some snorkel or scuba diving...

Advantages: A five-star stay… Disadvantages: …with just three-star facilities
...simplicity often trumps ritzy ostentation. Attentive service matters, but nothing is nastier than the kind of smarmy obsequiousness that always seems to mask a sneer. And so on. Maybe it's simply down to that indefinable essence known as character or personality.
These inconsequential musings are prompted by my trying to pinpoint what it was about the Casa San Blas at Cusco that I liked so much. The hotel is certainly not without its limitations and even its failings, but it's a nevertheless a charming and delightful place to stay. Let's try to summarise what it has to offer.
