Advantages: Beautiful Grounds Disadvantages: Certain privately held condos
...Casadel Mar is a gorgeous small resort. The grounds are beautifully maintained. Our unit La Perle 304 which is privately owned and managed, was a disappointment. When we arrived, there were hundreds of ants on the kitchen counter. The apartment sized refrigerator was inadequate unless you plan to use it only for drinks. The freezer wasn't cold enough to make ice nor large enough for anything except 3 water bottles. The toilet was cracked and leaking resulting in a wet bathroom floor for the entire stay. The leak caused the water to run off and on all day and all night. Judging by the corrosion around the floor, it had been leaking for some time. The beds were very hard causing sore hips in the morning. The TV in the bedroom was nonfunctional. This is not a condo to enjoy a restful getaway. I assume that other condos in this resort...

Advantages: A unique and quaint hotel... Disadvantages: Lacking a few mod-cons...
...as the foundation for the Cathedral of San Idelfonso (1556-1599), the oldest cathedral on the American continent !
The hotel is a short taxi ride away from the main bus station, from where we took a 50 mile bus ride to Uxmal, the next stop on our Yucatan tour...
We booked our room here through Trailfinders, and as rates and availablity will vary, check on Expedia, or your favourite travel site, for current rates and book your self a bargain !
Hotel Casadel Balam
Calle 60
Merida 97000
Mexico
Overall, this is a lovely little, but luxurious hotel with an intimate colonial feel. Excellent quality service made our (short) stay here very pleasant, and I would certainly recommend anyone to stay here rather than some anonymous chain, like the Hyatt or similar.
I hope this helps......

I toured some of the other hotels nearby and I knew I made the right decision. The only negative we encountered was the daily drilling near the pool (they were upgrading the tiles around the pool area). They started drilling each morning at 10am and continued for several hours - it was impossible to sit on our balcony or lay by the pool and relax. Fortunately, the sister hotel is right next door and we enjoyed laying by their quiet pool. I noticed that other nearby hotels were also doing maintenance on their properties so each hotel had their own little quirks. We talked to the manager about the annoying drilling and all he could say was "sorry". And it didn't seem sincere...
