Madeira - Paradise

Advantages: Fantastic in every way
Disadvantages: None as far as I'm concerned

Having visited Madeira twice now, and experienced different hotels and different sightseeing each time, I thought it would be a good time to write up our experiences of the island- which I have to say are entirely positive. I would go as far as to say that it's probably the best holiday destination we've been to yet- although with a few long distance trips planned, who knows if that will remain the case. All I can say is that Madeira will be a hard place to beat- and this tale of two trips will hopefully explain why. For those who aren't aware or only vaguely aware, Madeira is one of the Portuguese territories in the mid-Atlantic. It's actually closer to Morocco and Western Sahara than it is to Portugal, and so the flights do take several hours to get there. Considering its location, Madeira doesn't tend to get uncomfortably hot ...

Riu Palace Hotel, Madeira

Advantages: A fantastic holiday experience
Disadvantages: Location, in particular for those with mobility problems although the hotel is disability friendly.

looked spectacular we had a cupid running round the hotel, all ladies were given a red rose on entering the restaurant and the whole place was decorated with red flowers and balloons - cheesy but great fun on holiday. There is also a theme restaurant which offers a different type of dining in particular serving the delicacies from Madeira such as espada, which is a long, black, really ugly, but unbelievably delicious fish native to the deep waters off the islands; and espetada which is hunks of garlic marinated beef barbecued on a large bay twig skewer (by large I mean 3ft long). You can choose to eat here one night rather than the restaurant, you just book it at reception. My daughter and I never dined there in the evening so cannot comment from experience. Lunch is served in the Pool Restaurant with tables under the palm trees beside ...

The discreet charm of the Casa San Blas

Advantages: A five-star stay?
Disadvantages: ?with just three-star facilities

extraordinary hours. (I only hope I've spelled her name correctly; it is pronounced without the "h".) However spelt, she is a lady of seemingly inexhaustible energy and charm. She will make you feel at home as the formalities are seen to, explaining in excellent English anything that needs explaining and offering advice on any outings you may be considering. She is not a stickler for rules. "Is that really the checkout time?" I asked, noticing that the specified hour seemed alarmingly early. "No," she replied without the slightest hesitation, just a smile and a shrug. "Check out whatever time suits you." That's the kind of attitude I like in a hotel. The Casa San Blas boasts a high staff-to-guest ratio (2:1), and there is always help at hand if you need it, but it is not unctious or officious. All the staff members with whom we ...
