The discreet charm of the Casa San Blas

Advantages: A five-star stay?
Disadvantages: ?with just three-star facilities

Why does one like or dislike a hotel? Sometimes the reasons are obvious - a clean, polite place will beat a rude, slovenly one in anyone's book - but sometimes they're not. Naturally, the criteria vary from person to person. In my own case, having stayed at literally hundreds of hotels in my time, I still find it difficult to pinpoint what makes the crucial difference. Size matters, but it isn't everything. Even quite large hotels can sometimes prove pleasant to stay in. Ownership matters. Generally, independent hotels are better than those managed by chains because they are less typecast and their owners care more than employee-managers do, but there are exceptions: I've even stayed at Hiltons I've enjoyed, whilst some family-run places (à la Fawlty Towers) are the pits. Facilities and décor matter, but tasteful ...

The Casa Batllo - Possibly Gaudi's finest work

Advantages: One of the best examples of Catalan Modernism
Disadvantages: Very expensive

in~ Mid December is probably the quietest time of the year to do anything of a touristic nature in Barclona and the Casa Batllo is a particularly good example of that. It's not actually a very big building and can easily get jam-packed with tourists. If you try to get into this attraction in summer the lines are long and the wait's interminable. But we strode straight up to the ticket booth without any delay. However, it might have been better to take some time to get over the shock of ?16 entry fee. 'For goodness sake' I muttered under my breath 'I want to visit the house, not buy it!' The Entrance fee includes a very good and comprehensive audio tour. At some times in the year I think it's possible to buy a cut-down ticket that only includes the main floor of the building and excludes the attic and the chimney. However we weren ...

Benalmadena the Costa del Sol

Advantages: Friendly town with lots to do, a lovely holiday.
Disadvantages: If you steer clear of the 'English Bars' there are none

COSTA DEL SOL Benalmadea Costa, I'm afraid I was always a bit of a 'travel snob' regarding the Costa del Sol. I envisaged the types of scene in TV's Benadorm, a type of Blackpool with sun. As members of a vacation club ( it was then Sunterra now Diamon Resorts) we had the opportunity for a weeks break for relatively few points at the Sahara Sunset in Benalmadea Costa, as we could get Easy Jet airfairs to Malaga for a very low price we decided to try it. We have been three times more since then - so needless to say I was not disappointed. Benalmadena is only 15 kilometers from Malaga Airport, car hire is easily obtainable but it is only 25 euros for a taxi from the airport and there are plenty of excursions and good public transport available in the resort. It is set on the Costa del Sol between ...
