We walked around the corner in fact we drifted along on the smells and came across a pizza restaurant, "Casablanca" in the old town in Funchal.

On entering we were engulfed in the warm armours of Italy, wonderful.

We were shown to a table big enough for the 4 of us and given the menus. It took a time to get through this.

As Madeira is an island, the main stay diet is fish, just my luck that I don't eat it. I have never seen such a varied menu for pizza. They have everything from veggie through the food chain on top of a pizza.

Mussels, sardines, chilli, pineapple, peach you think of it name it it's on there. The choice is endless.

They also had a wide choice of pasta dished on the menu, if you are not a pizza lover.

Robert had the mussels, Steve the hot chilli, Jane had a calzone and I had the salami.

We ordered 3 large beers (caneca, a pint) and Jane had wine. With the drinks we where given a bowl of olives to nibble on until the pizza arrived.

They didn't take long and arrived at the table in what looked like a flan dish; they are cooked in the pizza oven but served up on the flan dish/plate.

The pizza base was like eating warm crisp pastry and was delicious, with a good amount of topping, enough to get to the edges and the end of the pizza without thinking, I just have the dry crust to eat or leave. All of us agreed that they were very good.

We looked at the dessert menu but best view was in the chilled cabinet, to what looked like Tiramisu, which we ordered. We were told it was not Tiramisu but a local dish very similar but lighter and the top was covered in a soft chocolate, yum yum. It was lighter, it was good and it had pineapple in the middle of it, the serving was enough for two but it would have been rude to have left it.

After the meal we were given a drink on the house to celebrate Steve's birthday, of almond liqueur and our waiter had a drink of it with us, very hospitable and nice.

The whole bill came to 44 euros, well worth the money every euro of it.

We would fully recommend you following your nose to find "Casablanca" of all places in all the world, this is one worth visiting.
