It's got a reasonable range of stores, with a large Continente supermarket , FNAC, Zara & Zara Home, Area, Toys R Us and various clothes / gifts / homeware shops, plus restaurants,on site. However, parents of babies & toddlers be warned : it's quite tricky to navigate with a pushchair! There are 2 lifts in the centre of the mall, but these can take forever to arrive. Also, to get to the Sports Zone on the top level, you need to go outside into the car park if you've got a pushchair - nightmare! If you want to catch the bus from Cascais, it only runs very infrquently, and to get the bus back you have to negotiate loads of steps to cross the main road.
I would recommend a trip to one of the central Lisbon malls if you really want to shop 'til you drop - Cascais Shopping is too limited in range and frustrating to get around to win my vote.
Advantages: Relaxing, friendly, not over developed Disadvantages: Cooler weather than the Algarve
of the great names who have stayed.
More recently Estoril and Cascais may not be the playground of the rich and famous but it has remained popular with Portuguese people, especially families.
The two towns have very different feels.
Estoril has developed into a rather swish area with a number of five star hotels and the famous Casino. It also has many nice residential areas but very few shops and attractions etc. Estoril still reflects the fashionable past as you will see by the buildings. It is a lovely base but is just that, a base. Unless you are staying in the area for a specific reason such as a sporting event, golfing holiday I would suggest making your base in Cascais.
Cascais has retained its fishing village feel and you can still see the fishermen at work early each morning. The buildings here are very traditional fishing ...
Advantages: Pretty easy to get to from UK Disadvantages: Lots to see not enough time!
!
Entry was a mere 3 Euros each and was well worth paying even if only for the tremendous views over the city and across the River Tagus.
Castelo de Belem
This is a strange castle, jutting out over the River Tagus. It was built apparently as a defence against anyone who had the idea that they could just mosey on up the Tagus and attack the city. Must have been quite effective as it?s in pretty good shape.
Entry here was also 3 Euros per person.
Expo ?98
The site built for Expo ?98 still attracts a lot of visitors and we enjoyed a great day and evening there. This site housed one of only 2 shopping malls we saw on holiday. The other being in Cascais (nearby town).
There?s a huge sea-life centre ? apparently the largest in Europe, larger than 4 football pitches space wise, the brochure informs the visitor. Unfortunately we ...
