Nestling in the mountains between Marseille, Aubagnia, and La Çiotat. The Harbour of Cassis, an ancient fishing village, is overlooked by a small chateau which looks (to me anyway) as if it has been hewn out of the rock of the mountain. The area around the harbour almost looks like a miniture Nice (I would say), and it is surounded by some of the most spectacular mountainous scenery.

The village is quit friendly. But unfortunately it is very touristique and it can get very crowded.

Cassis is a short distance from Marseill, and the best way there is by bus. But you have to change at Aubagnia (It is well worth stopping there and having a look round). The bus is actually a fully air conditioned coach aptly called the Navette, meaning shuttle.

If you are staying in the provance region I strongly recommend paying a visit to Cassis. Because it is very beautiful. The water's lovely and warm and you can bathe. There are boat rides to the Calanques. The deep rocky inlet to the Provencal Fiords situated between Cassis and Marseille. This is something that you shouldn't miss. There are lots of lovely little restaurants, and an artists market. There are lots of narrow streets and lovely buildings, some of them dating back to the 16th century.*

Really I could have done with two or three visits to really get the best of Cassis. But who knows. Maybe I'll go back there soon.

There is only a tiny disadvantage. From the harbour, it is a very long walk to the station. But if you come by bus that won't be a problem.
