Visit the lovely town where Mozart was born
Review of Salzburg (Austria) by  Michael-S

Advantages: lovely town, beautiful scenery, a lot of history and culture
Disadvantages: sometimes crowded (mainly in August)

...Salzburg is a lovely town in Austria, with a population of less than 150,000. It is the birthplace of Wolfang Amadeus Mozart. I have been there a number of times and I will certainly go there again. For many centuries, Salzburg was dominated by the Prince-Archbishops, and you can still see many signs of their power nowadays. The name Salzburg can be translated as 'Salt Castle' and it refers to the castle which overlooks the whole town (Hohensalzburg) and to the importance of salt mining in the area of Salzburg which has contributed to the richness of the population (in particular of the Archbishops). The most important and recommendable sights where I have been to are as follows: THE OLD TOWN You can see most of Salzburg by just walking around. Situated on both sides of the Salzach river, you can see a lot of lovely buildings... Read review

"St. Francis Church" Salzburg, Austria
Review of Franziskanerkirche, Salzburg by  nosey21

Advantages: One of the oldest churches of Salzburg
Disadvantages: -

..."Franziskanerkirche" in Salzburg is special in the history of European architecture. It is one of the oldest churches of Salzburg. In the year 774 this church was first mentioned. At that time it was a baptistery and used to be part of St. Peter Monastery. It was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In the year 1139 it became a parish church, but this church was one out of six churches (including the famous Salzburg Cathedral) which burnt down in the year 1167. The church was originally rebuilt in 1123 but only part of this is now still remaining. In the year 1408 it was rebuilt yet again. The choir in its present form (except, of course, for the decorative additions made in the baroque period) acts as a centralizing space which unites and harmonizes with the late Romanesque nave. It is known that the choir was still under... Read review

The Beautiful Salzburg
Review of Salzburg (Austria) by  sianybaby1986

Advantages: This may make you want to see Salzburg yourself
Disadvantages: I don't think there are any

...I have been to Salzburg 3 times, all in December. The first 2 times I went was with my Secondary School on ski trips in Schladming which is about a 20 minute drive from Salzburg I think. Austria is an excellent place to ski; the views from the mountains are just amazing. I skied down the Planai hundreds of times which are, if I remember correctly the highest or steepest down hill slope in the world (that you can ski down); please correct me if I am wrong. There is a small bar/restaurant at the top which I have eaten and drank in many times before flying down the slopes. The food in Austria is very different but also very tasty and the drinks are very strong, hehehe!! Each time I have been I have shopped in Salzburg. I don't know what it is like at other times of the year but in December it is very beautiful, especially... Read review
