The Castle Inn, Castleton, Derbyshire

Advantages: Lovely setting, good atmospher, Historic
Disadvantages: Can get very busy, Food is only average

visible from the road. This helps to give the garden a more private, intimate feel and creates a charming, relaxed ambience. The Castle Inn dates from around 1600 and until Victorian times it was a popular stop off point for the Stagecoaches that travelled between Sheffield and Manchester. There are several historical documents that survive, which give us an insight into the history of this place and we know that during the reign of King Charles 11 the Landlord of this Pub was fined for brewing his own beer without a license. It is said that the Castle Inn has at least four different resident Ghosts. These include an old man who wears a pinstriped suit, a jilted Bride and a lady dressed in grey. Culzean Castle - A Great Day Out

Advantages: Something for everyone
Disadvantages: Maybe a bit expensive for some

Restaurant; they were serving your average lunch time fare of soups, sandwiches and light snacks, and of course teas, coffee, cold drinks and ice creams. As it was such a nice day we sat outside to eat, looking across the castle walls to the sea, we were treated to visits from bull finches who came to share in our lunch. They weren?t a nuisance though, and for someone like me who lives in a town centre and rarely sees anything but pigeons, it was very cute. Later we stopped by at the Swan Pond Kiosk for ice creams, which despite asking for small ones, were absolutely huge! Culzean and its grounds are so varied, there?s something to suit everyone, whether you?re a nature lover, a history buff, enjoying walking or like my two kids, enjoy climbing and running around and generally having fun. The National Trust have attraction days throughout ...

The King of Castles

Advantages: One of the most impressive historical buildings I have ever seen
Disadvantages: The fact that its not more widely known

a young William Orr was found guilty of being a traitor and hung in front of the castle as an example to others. It had the opposite effect and the battle cry Remember Orr was used by the rebels in the United Irishmen Rebellion of 1798. The castle is built upon a rock. The rock has a well in it which still to this day supplies some of the freshest drinking water available although for health and safety reasons visitors are not allowed to drink it. Legend has it that the rock is where a King Fergus washed ashore after his boat sank. He drank the water from the well during his recovery and thus the town of Carrickfergus was born. (Carric (might be spelt wrong) in Irish means rock) thus Carrickfergus is the Rock of Fergus. My opinion As a school boy living in the town I was mesmerised by the interesting and often bloody history that ...
