Hawarden Castle

Advantages: Historic site, beautiful parkland, well preserved Motte and Bailey
Disadvantages: Only open to the public two or three times a year

...and boasts a number of castles (about fourteen, I think) of which seven lie in my home county of Flintshire. Most, sadly, are now left abandoned and in ruins. Many say that Hawarden, the village, in which I live, has two castles. Of course this is not strictly true. The newer quasi-castle was the stately home of William Ewart Gladstone, the former British Prime Minister who actually died in the house on May 19th 1898. His descendantsstill live in ...
...they have preserved his study, known as the Temple of Peace as a museum to his memory. I have been privileged to be permitted into this study and to have a look around - but that is another story. The true castle is nestled in the wooded parkland associated with the Gladstone home. Indeed, the main access to the old castle is now over a small bridge that links the two and can only be reached from the gardens of the "new" castle. As a young girl, ...

Cardiff Castle

Advantages: City centre, History. Culture
Disadvantages: Bang in city centre so difficult to park

One of the big surprises that await many visitors to Cardiff -or Caerdydd in welsh- is the fact that there is castle slap bang in the middle of the city. This is a stunning place although some people say it is not a proper castle. It was it seems a Roman fort but around the 12 th century,A Norman Keep was added within the walls. Not much happened to the place until the Victorian period when the Marquess of Bute-allegedly then the richest man in europe- ...
...the rooms in it are stupendous with a fine detailing. Each of them basically have a theme which are exemplified through lavish detailing with a great deal of symbolism. Also on site are military museums including that of the Welsh calvary regiment and there is a tea room and a gift shop. A guided tour is well worth the 4.80 pounds it costs and the guides are hghly knowledgeable. You can if you wish just tour the grounds for which there is a reduced ...

Caernarfon Castle

Advantages: Beautiful full castle
Disadvantages: None

The problem with visiting many castles is that they are ruins and you have to put in a lot of imagination to understand how life was in them. Not so at Caernarfon Castle which is still complete as it was when built in the late 13th Century. It was made famous by the birth of the first Prince Of Wales here in 1284 just a year after it was completed. This event marked an attempt to secure Wales under the English throne by Edward 1. The Castle served ...
...and the centre of government for the province. It was also deliberately designed to be a castle of magical beauty to rival those seen by earlier Kings during their trips abroad to Palestine for the Crusades. The castle used different coloured stone to create a circular effect around the many sided towers and its position at the mouth of the river of course remains spectacular. It is possible to walk along the battlements to gain a better view of ...

Castell Coch

Advantages: It was beautiful
Disadvantages: None

A beautiful Welsh castle on the side of a hill. Visible (and 5 mins drive) from the M4, this fairytale looking castle is magnificent both inside and out. The entry fee was about £3.00, and there was the option of an audio assisted tour as well, i think this was about £8.00. The castle itself, though small, was amazingly breathtaking. Upstairs is the Banquet room, still looking like it would have done all that time ago. Through the Banquet room is ...
...now the room that all wedding ceremonies that take place at the castle are held in. Other rooms in the castle include the kitchen, Lord Bute's bedroom on the second floor, and Lady Bute's bedroom on the third floor. Lord Butes bedroom looks very plain in decoration and furniture. However, head upstairs to Lady Bute's bedroom, and it's a very different story. Lavish furniture, gold paint on the ceiling. All in all a beautiful room. Pick any window ...

'I can see for miles and miles...'

Advantages: Beautiful location, fascinating history
Disadvantages: Not much to do if the weather's bad

A recent trip to Wales resulted in several trips to the many castles that exist, one of which was Harlech Castle. Although now in ruins (well it is seven hundred years old!), it is an imposing sight, situated, as it is, on the top of a hill overlooking the sea. And, providing that the weather isn't too dreadful, there is plenty to see and do. Location Harlech Castle can be found in the centre of Harlech town, a small coastal town in Wales, not too far away from Portmadog. You can't miss the castle - it stands out a mile - but careful watching for road signs is necessary to find the way to the entrance. The town itself is geared up for tourists, in that there are plenty of places to eat and shops selling souvenirs - however, there is little in the way of other shops. There is a small pay and display car park just outside ...

Review of Harlech Castle, Wales

A great day out for all the family

Advantages: Good food, interesting history, beautiful grounds
Disadvantages: A bit pricey

A few weeks ago hubby and I joined the National Trust using the money his mom had given him for his birthday and today we finally christened our membership cards! Mom in law is currently staying with us for a couple of weeks so the three of us decided to go and take a look around Penrhyn Castle. The weather forecast was dire so we wanted somewhere that we could be indoors. As it happens the rain didn't arrive until we got home at tea time but that's often how it happens here and we don't complain! Penrhyn Castle is situated about two miles from Bangor in North Wales. To get there you can catch one of the numerous buses that run from either Llandudno or Bangor which pass close to both Bangor railway station and the end of the drive leading up to the castle. To reach the castle by car just drive along the A55 which is the dual ...

Penrhyn Castle - no buggies allowed

Advantages: A fantastic example of times gone by
Disadvantages: Families with small children could be limited to the actual castle.

As a member of the National Trust I have visited a number of places around England and Wales. I have on several occasions been to Penrhyn Castle, as they have a number of activity days throughout the year, which are very entertaining in themselves. I am very impressed by stature of this building as it was built between 1820 and 1845. The building itself is very well presented and the rooms are a delight to walk through - especially the dining room, which has to be seen to be believed and never fails to impress me. The bedrooms and the kitchen are also favourites of mine as they take you back in time by the display of utensils and materials and it makes you think about how lucky we are to have electricity. Each room has a member of staff who will tell you about the artifacts on show and answer any questions one might have about the way ...
