Catalonia Excelsior Hotel is located in an emblematic building dating from the mid 20th century, which has undergone comprehensive renovation throughout the year 2000. Its location is excellent, right in the centre of Valencia, in Barcelonina Street next to the Town\\\'s Hall Square and a few metres from the railway station (Euromed, Alaris...), the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències and 15 minutes from the Trade Fair Centre and the airport. The guestrooms have parquet flooring and wooden furniture; bathrooms are marble and have complimentary toiletries. Guests can watch the world go by in the street-facing bar and lounge area, with its deep armchairs and wooden bar.
...As anyone who has read my early reviews knows- I love Italy! I've been going there now for the past ten years with my parents, and for the first time last year I made my own way there with the boyfriend for a nice Italian holiday. The Grand HotelExcelsior was my residence for numerous weeks holiday, and it certainly not one for the faint hearted! In the Thompson guide book it is described as 'quaint' which to put it politely is rather an understatement. One thing that can be said for it is it is completely oozing with Italian charm.
ARRIVAL/ LOCATION
If you book with Thompson as we did (though other tour operators go to the same location) flights go from Manchester Airport on a Friday morning, taking just over 2 and a half hours to get to Naples International Airport. From Naples the coastal resort of Amalfi is approximately...

Advantages: Sea views, quiet, value for money Disadvantages: a little remote
...be to eat in one of Valencia's many restaurants for more variety though.
When we visited in October the hotel was quiet. Not sure how busy it gets in summer.
Main drawback to this place is its location. About 15-20 minutes drive south of the city centre. Hire a car and get out into the surrounding areas, the mountains are not far away and the Lladro ceramics factory is to the north of the city and offers free factory tours, fascinating for any collectors.
However the hotel does provide a free minibus service to the bullring/railway station that runs about every 30 minutes until midnight. Drivers are friendly and will give you directions if needed.
In fact all the staff were polite and most spoke good English. They were keen to help and give advice on tourist attractions.
Valencia is a fantastic city, but don't tell every one...

Advantages: Location - proximity to railway station Disadvantages: No Internet access in rooms, not wheelchair-friendly
...I stayed at the HotelExcelsior in Munich on a brief overnight stay following a business trip to Munich. The hotel had been recommended by the BayernLB, who I was visiting as part of the trip, and they'd been able to get me a very favourable rate - of EUR 118 for a night including breakfast which was a considerable saving over the rack rate for the hotel. It was particularly practical as the hotel was only a couple of hundred metres from the main railway station (Munich Hbf) which made it a good choice as I could drop my bags off on my way past on the way to the bank. I cose to check in at the same time - and despite the fact that my room was not ready, they were fine about this and had my luggage taken to my room as soon as it did become ready.
The hotel foyer was relatively small, with only a couple of reception desks...
