Saxon crypt in England, and forms part of the Cathedral you see today, resting beneath Archbishop Roger de Pont l'Evêque's 12th century minster. Today's church is in fact the fourth to have stood on this site. The remainder of St Wilfrid's church was destroyed by the English King in AD948. A second minster was built at Ripon, but it too perished - this time in 1069 at the hands of William the Conqueror. Thomas of Bayeux, first Norman Archbishop of York, then instigated the construction of a third church, but building had to be postponed due to the outbreak of the War of the Roses. In 1547, before all the work was finished, Edward VI dissolved Ripon's college of canons. All revenues were appropriated by the Crown and the tower never received its last Perpendicular arches. cathedral or cooling tower - you decide

Advantages: Eco building and hold a lot of people, simple
Disadvantages: Rather ugly from outside

Catedral Metropolitana The Metropolitan Cathedral in Rio de Janeiro is incredibly surprising in shape and impact. When we first arrived and were told that this was a Cathedral we didn't quite know what to say. I thought it was such an ugly looking building, resembling n electricity cooling tower rather than a Cathedral. I'm not big into Cathedrals and churches but they are usually quite attractive buildings and often have an interesting history. While we had been in South America we had been into quite a number of the really ornate, ostentatious Catholic churches which were full of gold and silver statues and other gilt decorations and so this was even more of a surprise because we expecting a similar Cathedral, maybe even bigger and more elaborate but no, what we were faced with was a simple concrete conical building with no ...

An Icy Cathedral

Advantages: Interesting place of worship
Disadvantages: Gets busy

The Arctic cathedral in Tromsø stood out amongst the smaller houses surrounding it and was visible long before we approached the bridge to cross over to the mainland. The unusual shape representing the shape of a Sami (the people who tend the reindeer) tent and the iciness of a glacier was built in 1965 on a site that was originally a bunker, being close to Russia they were prepared. The huge white walls form an A shape and there are windows at both ends of the building. The walls are 11 pieces of concrete covered with Aluminium, which represent the 11 apostles left after the betrayal of Christ. Between the wall sections is glass which lets light into the church, supplying much of the inside light in the church, especially during the midnight sun season.
