after construction began in 1160 the St Pierre Cathedral has been changing ever since. When it was first built it had a sort of Romanesque-Gothic look, but then when it converted to Protestantism in 1536 the Cathedral was stripped of altars, statues, paintings and furniture, only the stained glass windows were allowed to stay. The Cathedral was famous for John Calvins sermons, that he delivered for 18 years since the Cathedral converted to protestantism, and his chair still remains, situated in the front row.

Many of the visitors go for the spectacular views which ypu can see from the spire, after climbing a narrow and winding staircase consisting of 157 or 8 steps, i can't remember which, you end up seeing the entire of Geneva and beyond, from the Lake and the fountain to the mountains.

Although i never saw it, archaeologists have found many historic things underground. They have found remains of 3 churches before it, 4th century christian sanctuaries and even mosaics from the Roman Empire.

If you stuck for somewhere to go, because Geneva hasn't got a lot to see if you are staying a long time, i would say for you to go there. It's free to get in, but costs a little to go to the top. Fair enough it's not the greatest cathedral ever, but it is a fairly important catherdral, with all the debates and argument that must have occure there. Spend as long as you like here, they still do sermons to this day, although i am not religious myself they are said to be very good sermons. Situated on top of a hill in the old city, surrounded by cafe's so you can just pop in after a nice drink, well i will have to say it's nicer in the Summer.
