Upon approaching Mactan International Airport by air, about two miles east of Mactan Island, you will see
Olango Island.
Olango "enlarges" to double size when it is low tide. No portion in this flat, low lying island and its satellite islets reaches an elevation of more than 10 meters (30 feet) above sea level. On its southern shore is a Wildlife Sanctuary.
Over 10,000 migratory birds are in Olango Island, 97 species of birds: 48 are migratory species, 42 are resident and the status of 7 is uncertain; but breeding is poosible to all of them. Among the 54 water-birds species: 32 species are waders, 13 species are waterfowls and 9 species are sea birds.
Migration starts in the Northern Hemnisphere - Sibiria, Northern China and Japan. Anticipating the ccarcity of food and the winter cold, these birds fly south as far as Australia, from the late July until late November. Northward migration starts by late February until May, when they return to their breeding grounds.
High tide is the best time to go to the island. Tide times are shown in most calendars. It is advisable to be at the sanctuary during low tide - to see the birds foraging on the vast intertidal flats. It is also easier to walk from one site to another when the tide is low.
To view the birds roosting in large concentration, it is also suggested to be at the sanctuary immediately prior to a 1.2 - 1.4 meter high tide. Beyond this, the birds roost inside the mangroves.

There are scheduled ferry boats across the Hilutungan Channel from Angasil (on the east coast of Mactan) between 5:30 in the morning to 6:00 in the evening. Tricycles (motor-bikes with "side cars") are the usual transport between the barangays and sitios in the island. The island's main roads are mostly sandy.
There are seven barangays in Olango Island, and it has a total land area of 954 hectares. Santa Rosa's area is 321 hectares and has about 4,500 inhabitants making it the largest barangay and the gateway to the island. Olango Island belongs to the City of Lapu Lapu in Mactan. The island has its own electric power plant also in Santa Rosa.
Olango's rock base is coral limestone and littoral flats with thin sand or silt substrate and exposed rock base. The alluvium occupies mostly the coastal area of the island. Most of the 920 hectares is composed of calcareous sand, derived from the weathering of the limestone mixed with shell fragments.
Olango Island has relatively few plant species. In the sanctuary, there are 27 species of mangroves; marine algae thrive among the mangroves and the rock substrate of the intertidal and sub-tidal flats, while extensive sea grass beds can be observed in the foul ground of the southern most part of the sanctuary.
The climate is hot and humid with average temperatures between 26° adn 33° Celsius; relatively dry from February to May, and wet for the remainder of the year, with heaviest rainfall during November and December. The island is partly sheltered grom the southeast monsoon and tradewinds by Bohol and Mactan Islands, but is open to the northwest monsoon with associated cyclonic storms.
Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary is an internationally protected area and a great potential for eco-tourism.
Travel Tips:
It is recommended to wear durable rubber shoes. Slippers are not advisable for walking through the intertidal area. Watch your steps so you can avoid sharp corals, shells and sea urchins. Soft drinks or beer can be bought in stores in the barangays. In the sanctuary, rain water is available. If you bring food and water, please bring home all your rubbish and do not leave plastics. They are dangerous to the birds and marine life.
More information is available from the DoT - Department of Tourism and the DENR - Department of Environmental and Natural Resources and at the Office of the Lapu Lapu City Mayor.

If you ever plan to visit the bustling city and province of Cebu, Philippines, take note: DO NOT even consider the shamefully shabby Days Hotel Cebu for your holiday.
Our travel party had expected decent accommodations in this Days Hotel, since CebuCity happens to be one of the larger and exciting cities in the Visayas region of Southern Philippines (a cluster of islands in the center of the archipelago). Well, were we ever so wrong!
A Bit About Cebu.
CebuCity brims with historical significance. It's the oldest Christian city in the Philippines, established by Spanish colonizer Miguel Lopez de Legaspi in 1571. (The country's oldest avenue is Colon St. in busy downtown CebuCity, named oddly after Christopher Columbus.) Decades before Legaspi's arrival, Portuguese explorer Fernando de Magallanes/Ferdinand Magellan first ...
