Work can require me to visit the lovely world of West Yorkshire from time to time and the closest hotel to my office, happens to be the Cedar Court Huddersfield. I have stayed there once but wouldn’t rush back. The only thing going for it in my opinion is the closeness to the M62 and the cheap corporate rate!
Arrival The hotel is situated just off the M62 at Ainley Top making it handy for the local road links. There is an abundance of on-site car parking which is free for residents and at night there is a security guard outside throughout the darker hours to help keep your car safe.
Check In Check in was straightforward if a little robotic. We were processed through, credit cards swiped and then given the key to our rooms. This key was extremely retro and of a large size making it difficult to keep in your pocket and felt more like you were carrying around a big white elephant with you!
The Room There is always a little anticipation when you first open the hotel door as to what you will find behind. Is it going to be a big exciting room with lots of toys and features???? No, it was not. The room was a standard size but very old. There was an old fashioned TV in the corner. An attempt at broadband on the desk. A tea tray which had seen better days and a rather yellowed hairdryer.
The bathroom again was rather traditional but the shower did have good water pressure. Toiletries were minimal with shower gel, shampoo and a bar of soap.
Sleep that night was rather restless. The room was very hot and if you were to open the window you would be greeted by the road noise from outside. The double bed was also quite lumpy and I’m sure you could see straight through the pillows! So it was really a lose lose situation.
The room was not up to my standards and it was only after my stay was I advised that the rooms on the higher floors had been refurbished and were a little more modern. My colleague however still wasn’t ‘wowed’ by this room either.
Restaurant/Bar The hotel had a standard European restaurant and a lobby bar. There appeared to be very little atmosphere in either of these. When we had returned from dinner we decided to have a few drinks. The bar was full of traveling male salesmen. All sat around blackberry/laptop in hand. You could have cut the sexual tension with a knife as when I returned to the bar with two female colleagues all eyes were on my colleagues. It was like all these men had not seen their wives/girlfriends for days. The stares became rather uncomfortable! The drinks were ‘hotel’ priced and we stayed for a few before retiring for the night.
Facilities The hotel caters for conference and banquets with the function rooms and also has an on site gym, pool and spa. Again I did not experience any of these aspects so I cannot comment on them but from what I understand the pool is quite good.
Breakfast The lounge provided a full continental spread with a full English breakfast buffet. Staff brought round tea and coffee but apart from that we hardly ever saw them. Overall there was nothing to complain or write home about. It was standard.
Check out Check out was easy with a swipe of the credit card and we were on our way. Again it was rather robotic and the staff didn’t seem very interactive!
Summary To be fair I only needed a bed for the night whilst on business, however it still left me wanting more. The experience was just lacking in almost every area and did not encourage me to return for repeat business. I have since heard there is a Holiday Inn just around the corner which I shall give a try next time.
Cedar Court is certainly cheap but whether that translates into value is another matter.
Stay completed in May 2009. £59 for the night including breakfast. Booked through corporate travel partner.
