Advantages: Central location, Clean and comfortable, Friendly staff all speak excellent English Disadvantages: Local bars can get quite noisy, especially at weekends
with only a few rooms on offer and vary a lot in price and quality. This limited availability can make finding a good room a little tricky, although things have been helped along with the recent decision of the Icelandic Tourist Board to introduce a voluntary classification system based on the internationally recognised star ratings to help tourists out.
The HotelSkjaldbreid fits this description of the typical Reykjavikhotel pretty well. It is a small family run hotel with just 33 rooms, located over three floors of a converted stately house, and has taken up the new ratings system in a bid to attract foreign visitors. It is also advertised as 1 of only 11 hotels in the city with Yes Travel, the agency that I booked my holiday through. Why did I choose this one and not the ten others? The centrepiece of the exhibition is the site of a Viking longhouse that was inhabited from the early 10th century, and to the north ...
Advantages: Beatiful, crowd-free, unspoiled Disadvantages: Cold (just wrap up warm) and expensive

I have just returned from a family holiday in Reykjavik, the most northerly capital in the world. No one in our family is suited to the heat and we are not drawn by beach holidays. We were attracted by the reported beauty of the city and Iceland promised adventure with its volcanic landscape, geysers and waterfalls, puffins and whales. We were not disappointed and we left keen to return and explore more of this beautiful country.

Perched on the edge of the Arctic Circle, Reykjavik sits on the south west coast of Iceland, oh so many miles north of Scotland in the north Atlantic Ocean. It is rapidly increasing in size, mostly from people migrating here from other parts of the country. Iceland is very sparsely populated, two thirds of a total of only 300,000 Icelanders live in the Reykjavik area. This was ...
