What with the speed and excitement of New York, it's hard to imagine how the residents cling on to the tiniest shred of sanity, but the answer is quite simple - Central Park. A vast area of green makes up the Park which dominates much of the central area of Manhatten - so it is very near to a large number of locations - and those nearest tend to be expensive and much sought after. This is the only place where the rock that makes up New York's solid foundations is visible, breaching the ground in impressive formations. A park like no other, Central Park has everything from a Zoo to a chess area, and people head for the park for far more than a simple stroll. Definitely a haven for year-round residents, the Park is also well worth a look for tourists even if they aren't their long enough to really need a means of escape - if only to fill in the gaps of what must be a key location in many New Yorkers' lives.
