I have to say that my views have had to have been reviewed recently in the wake of the spate of derailments etc... that we have experienced on Britains railways. However I still remain optimistic about the state of the railways in this country and will continue to travel on them for a good while yet as i believe they are the best form of public transport.
I use the trains a lot to travel between Burton and Yorkshire and I can still safely say that despite all of the problems I am still a believer that rail privatisation was the correct thing to do.
For starters it generated a lot of money for the country and the Government of the time. Also people forget how bad things were under British Rail before thinking how bad they think things are now. I don't believe a Government can invest enough money into the public transport system and hence I believe that we will begin to reap the rewards very soon.
I am starting to see a lot of new trains arriving now. My local operator, Central Trains, have just unveiled their lovely new trains and they really are so comfortable and clean that I couldn't believe it when I first travelled on them. Back this up with my other main long distance operator, Virgin Trains, spate of new trains arriving between now and 2005, I believe we are in an increasingly better situation.
Overall I think there are safety concerns but I will continue to travel on Britains Railways and I will continue to sing the praises of the 3 operators I use, Central Trains, Virgin Trains and Northern Spirit. This is because i've had some decent service off all 3.

Good review but it could do with some more detail about Central trains network etc...

Excellent op my friend! Certainly agree with the points that you raised. And Manx's comment is true. If people knwo the economics behind the privatisation, they would see if different. I'm doing a study into rail privatisation, and i'm coming to concluding the report.

I have to agree. It annoys me when people jump on the bandwagon and say that Privatisation was a bad then when, in all likely hood, they know nothing about economics. Sure, the railways have problems... but it would be worse without the injection of private cash.
