A Beautiful Traditional Greek Mill

Advantages: Fantastic Situation, old world charm and good food
Disadvantages: A Bit off the Beaten Track - will neeed a car

We came across this hotel quite by accident. It was while we were heading for the village of Troodos and decided that it was time to stop as the evening was closing in and we hadn't found any suitable accommodation. The road left would have taken us into Troodos but we took the right turning to Kyperounda and followed the hilly road down the mountain. If you take the left turn at the bridge you will enter the village of Kakopetria. This is where the Mill Hotel is situated and what an unusual sight it is. Built into the mountain this building is an awesome sight when looking up to the top floor. The building has been renovated as originally the old Mill stopped working in the 1950's as milling became expensive and imported flour became available. This led to the mill closing down and eventually it fell into disrepair until it was bought ...

Review of The Mill Hotel, Nicosia

Lefkoşa - Nicosia's other half

Advantages: Antiquity, architecture, atmosphere
Disadvantages: Cut in two

The Saray Hotel is rather unprepossessing from the outside. Clad in a dingy grey on which its name is emblazoned in orangey-red lettering, it might have looked trendy when it was built around 1960, but not since. Just eight storeys high, it doesn't even seem very tall. Still, we had been told that it was the place from which to obtain the best view of Nicosia (or Lefkoşa, as the Turks prefer to call it), so we paid our YTL4 (£1.50) each to go up to the rooftop terrace. Since this fee also entitles you to a drink at the bar, it's not bad value. And the view lived up to its billing, which perhaps only emphasises how few tall buildings there are on the northern, Turkish side of the city. On the Greek Cypriot side, quite a few were visible, if mostly located some way out from the centre. The Turks claim that the Greeks ...

A 21st Century hotel in historic Reykjavik

Advantages: In the heart of traditional Reykjavic
Disadvantages: none

We visited this hotel in February 2008 for a short break and for anyone visiting Iceland for the first time it is the perfect place to stay. Firstly the hotel is located on the doorstep of the traditional, historical and prettiest part of Reykjavic which means that you can enjoy all the best that Reykjavic has to offer without having the stress of navigating around using taxis, cars or buses. You step out of the hotel into one of best areas for eating and shopping and this is a real bonus if you are less mobile and want to enjoy as much as possible without too much strain or if you want to see as much as possible during a short break. Secondly the hotel has historic and traditional elements of its own. As it was being re-built a couple of years ago they discovered one of the oldest buildings ever built by man in Iceland. This has ...
