I have just come back from a trip to Chamonix and really can't think of a better place to go skiing/snowboarding! Having read some reviews before setting off to Chamonix for the first time, I wasn't sure what to expect. People say the transportation between resorts was poor and that the lift system was bad. Here are my views:
Positives:
BREATHTAKING views of Mont Blanc
Great free transport to all resorts around the valley. Before going, I read quite a few reviews from people saying that the public transport wasn't particularly great. I didn't find any problems whatsoever with it. The buses come very regularly. They pick you up from the centre of Chamonix and take you right up to the ski lifts in the different resorts. I can imagine them being crowded in peak season, however, at this time of the year they were absolutely fine!
Friendly staff at the lifts - they were all really helpful and happy to assist with any questions/queries/advice etc.
An assortment of pistes with different difficulty levels. In contrast to what people have said in other reviews, there are LOADS of runs for beginners. And on the otherhand, there are LOADS intermediate and more advanced runs for experiences snowborders/skiers.
some great restuarants in Chamonix valley. I was recommended a sandwich/burger bar called POCO LOCO and would definitely recommend it - delicious, freshly made sandwiches, at reasonable prices. It's found in the middle of Chamonix on the main road.
Negatives: * A holiday in Chamonix ISN'T cheap. Lift passes & restaurants (especially the ones up the mountains) are expensive. We ended up taking our own sandwiches up with us.
Overall, I would DEFINITELY recommend Chamonix to everyone. It's a great place, most people speak english, friendly staff all round, great food, great bars, amazing views, but most importantly, FANTASTIC skiing. Loads of fun to be had.
