Five years ago my husband and I went to Prague for our honeymoon. One of the attractions that we were pointed into the direction of seeing was Charles Bridge which is built over the Vltava River.
In 1357 the bridge began to be built but it wasn’t finished until some hundreds of years later in the 15th century. It measures 516 metres long and nearly 10 metres wide and it is filled with 30 big statues of historical figures including various Saints and Patron Saints. From a distant the bridge is a breath taking site which can only be seen to be believed. The crowds that are drawn to it are simply unbelievable and on some of the days that we visited we could barely move through the hoards of people.
The statues are absolutely huge when stood next to them and they give the whole bridge a ‘gothic-feel’ to it. The originals are actually on display in a local museum so the one’s on the bridge are replica’s. They are black in colour and the detail is absolutely immense and makes you wonder how long it actually took for the creators to carve.Visiting the bridge was the highlight of my days in Prague and I didn’t tire of walking across it each and everyday. It would take us around an hour to get from one side to the other because there was so much to see and buy! Andrew and I have fond memories of watching the artist drawing cartoons of people. Every day we’d watch each one and on the last day of our holiday we chose a guy, the one we thought was the best cartoonist, to draw one of us.
If you like jewelry then this is definitely the place for you to go. I bought so many necklaces and bracelets which I still have to this day so you know that’s it’s good quality stuff. One of my favourite pieces that I bought was a necklace which was made out of slate, metal plate and metal while which was twisted around the slate to make a beautiful design that I haven’t seen anywhere else. I am constantly getting compliments about it even now. This really is a beautiful bridge with a lot of culture, history and plain old bargains to offer. If you manage to visit Prague then make sure you make time to visit Charles Bridge more than once because there is so much to see that you will miss a lot of it on your first visit.
